My recommendation to you is to pick up a copy of “Give Up” by The Postal Service (not that postal service but close, more on them later). It’s an indie-rock album with some electronica behind it, kind of a synthesizer backup going on in some of them. The effort was mainly the result of two artists, Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie and Dntel’s Jimmy Tamborello. Allegedly they got their name from the use of the U.S. Postal Service as a means for shipping recorded tracks back and forth to each other. Apparently they hadn’t figured out how to download the interweb at that point in their lives.
If you picked up the Garden State soundtrack then you’ll recognize ‘Such Great Heights’ which was covered by Iron and Wine on that album. Here you’ll find the original, faster tempo recording. I didn’t put this together earlier when I heard it but tonight I saw a UPS commercial using The Postal Service’s version of Such Great Heights as the background music. UPS using The Postal Service in their ad, eh?
If you enjoy the album then you’ll have to pursue one of their other projects as this seems to be their only collaboration. But apparently Death Cab for Cutie is quite popular these days. If I was hip I might have already known that before digging around on this.
Listen to some track clips below (thanks Amazon), then pick it up at the link further below (thanks Half.com):
