So not too long ago I went to go see the latest James Bond film, Casino Royale with Daniel Craig in theaters and loved it! Once it’s out on DVD I will probably purchase it and post more about it. But I digress. I thought it would be fun to watch the original Casino Royale (1967) with David Niven starring as James Bond. I knew it was supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek comedy that most true Bond aficionados don’t really consider part of the genre but, I figured what the hell. I expected it be some ‘wacky’ 60’s comedy like the Pink Panther, or It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad Worl, or A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. All of which I like even if I was born years after they were made. So I added it my Netflix queue and bumped it up to the top.
Much to my excitement I got it in time to watch this weekend. So I watched it. Bottom line, this was one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life. Maybe it was funny back in 1967, but I doubt it. It certainly didn’t stand the test of time. Yes, there were some hot chicks in it, who were scantily clad for the day. However, that is possibly this movie’s only redeeming quality. At no point in the film did I really feel like I had any idea what was going on. I actually fell asleep for 20 minutes during the movie and when I woke up I didn’t really feel like I’d missed anything. A better name for this film would have been James Bond in Bizarro World.
I thought it might just be me. Maybe I was taking the movie out of context of the decade in which it was made. So, I loaned the movie to my father-in-law who is old enough to have seen this movie in its prime in the theaters. He was very excited. He loves the movies from that era. With a cast of David Niven, Woody Allen, and Peter Sellers how could it be bad? Right? Wrong! I at least made myself sit through the whole thing. It was so awful, my father-in-law shut it off after about half an hour. He hated it.
If you are a really hard core James Bond fan, I could see you buying this for your collection (not to actually watch it, just to have). Otherwise, the best thing that I could say about this movie is that every copy of it in existence should be placed into a large pile and burned to save future generations from accidentally watching this travesty.
Summary: Not funny, dumb plot, no action, a few hot chicks. It should be burned. Don’t Watch It.
If you liked this one: I just can’t help you with this.
