300 the movie is an intense, thrilling, 2-hour, non-stop, battle extravaganza. I had high expectations going into this movie and was definitely not let down. 300 recreates Frank Miller’s graphic series (read: comic) on the big screen with the energy and strength that will definitely make it one of the best action films of the year.

Gerard Butler takes the lead role as Leonidas I, king of Sparta, who in 480 BC lead a group of 300 Spartan soldiers to fight the massive army of Xerxes the Great, ruler of Persia. The movie wastes no time driving straight to the punch and takes only short moments to catch its breath in between amazingly choreographed clashes. 300 focuses on this one battle and wastes precious little time with side stories of family and loved ones. Imagine nearly two hours worth of the Lobby Shootout in The Matrix. 300 relentlessly carries that same heightened level of energy throughout each wave of fighting.

This warriors’ tale succeeded in all the places Gladiator and Braveheart sank or lost their footing. Now I truly enjoyed both of those movies immensely, but I felt that watching 300 was like viewing a combined version of both of those movies on crack. Each new group of soldiers that Xerxes sends at the Spartans is a uniquely designed element in the movie. Even Xerxes himself is a fascinatingly constructed character within the story, though his androgynous appearance reflects RuPaul more than it should perhaps.

It has been a long time since I watched a movie that made me want to cheer out loud for the heroes. 300 embodied the energy and excitement I have been looking for in a true action movie. The fighting styles move quickly from fluid to near stop-action motion in such a fashion that kept the movie from ever feeling redundant or drawn out.

Clearly I can’t sing enough praises for this film and highly recommend it. Though be warned, it is brutal and rough every step of the way with dismembered body parts and hundreds of various deaths. If that doesn’t make you hesitate then this movie is for you.

300: My Rating is 4/4 stars. Simply awesome.
