Norwegian researcher Sven Svebak at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology has released a report that shows adults with a sense of humor are more likely to outlive their counterparts. Svebak found this to be especially true with people suffering from cancer.
The study’s focus group was 54,000 Norwegians who were tracked for seven years. They were analyzed based on an initial questionnaire which asked about their sense of humor and how easily they were entertained or found things humorous. The participants who were in the top 25% of those who appreciated humor were 35% more likely to remain alive than those in the bottom 25%. Svebak found that those in his study who had cancer reduced their risk of death by 70% when compared to adults who had a poor sense of humor.
