Well, its over. I just finished watching the series finale of HBO’s Rome. I still can’t believe HBO canceled the series. It was such a well done show. That may have been its undoing though. It seems the production costs were too high. The finale was everything I’ve come to expect from Rome; Treachery, sex, combat, heroism, loyalty, and love. Other than the fact that the series ended the only thing I didn’t like about the finale was that it felt rushed. It seemed like the producers tried to cram in too much, which I’m sure they had to. As a result, they at least did an creditable job of tying up all the loose ends.
I’m really going to miss this show. At least I’m not as bad as some of the real hardcore Harry Potter fans. I heard they set up a Harry Potter hotline so that all of the fans devastated by the end of that series can call and talk to a counselor. Frankly, if you feel like you need to call a counselor because Harry Potter is over, you probably do but, not because Harry Potter is ending. I’m going to keep HBO for a couple more months, until the Sopranos is over. Once the Sopranos and Rome are gone, so is HBO from my house. No reason to keep it. Goodbye Rome. Sileo in Pacis.

Very true. It’s amazing how often they cut shows off before they’re ready. I’m still bitter about Arrested Development being canceled.

Sopranos, Arrested Developement, Six Feet Under, Rome, you will all be missed. And may your beautiful, provacotive souls rest in peace.

Rome is a true masterpiece and canceling is a big loss.
Bring it back!

I agree 100%.. i LOVED ROME…i started watchign it too late… i just recently went and rented the entire first season…i got all caught up.. and now i hear its OVER???that sucks…HBO needs to pull their head out of their ass, and keep on the great shows everyone loves like ROME and the sopranos!! once the sopranos is over i TOO will NOT have HBO anymore!!!!!!
April 9th, 2007 at 9:53 am
I agree. HBO is going to be in big trouble come the end of The Sopranos now that they’ve also dropped Rome. Looks like they’re putting all their eggs in the Entourage basket…

I agree with all Of the comments above. After reading about this period of history, and how it mirrors our time period
only a shortsighted number cruncher would cancel this series.
I sincerely HOPE that the HBO CEO will reconsider!!!!!!

I agree, lets allll start a boycott on hbo and see if we can get the rome we love back.
April 18th, 2007 at 2:00 am
P.s. Who thinks there might be a chance it will come back in a year or two??? I think its possible
April 18th, 2007 at 10:52 am
Good point. FOX did that with Family Guy, so it’s always possible to have a delayed return.

Hey there! Ever wondered why HBO decided to end the Rome series? Well they’ve read some history books I guess and realised there’s nothing interesting in the next 15 years of Roman history! Octavian rules unanimously as emperor. I admitt I haven’t seen the series’ finale but, as far as I know, from that point on there would be nothing but two ages of dull pax Romana (with some even more dull reforms introduced meanwhile). So I guess HBO got rid of the series for the sake of historical accuracy and exhausting the plot! Am I right?

Em..I dont agree with you Tom…If you did any reading on Roman history then you would know that there is much more interesting stories to tell…Like all of the roman rulers after octavian were all being assasinated..the introduction of christianity..and so fourth..or how that crazy ruler burned down a whole section of rome..there is still more to tell..

I can think of many events during the rule of Augustus that would be fodder for the series. One that really sticks out is the war in Germania is which a large Roman army was destroyed.

what’s wrong with concentrating on the characters? after all they are the ones we fell in love with, not the history lesson of rome. hbo should seriously reconsider not going through with the cancellation. they haven’t done anything irreversible yet. we never actually saw vorenus take his last breath and they could play off the whole last scene as titus covering for them both (him for not killing cesarean and vorenus for not coming to octavian’s side) they could easily go into hiding and try to start a new life over. i would love to see more of atia and octavia chafing under the yoke of octavian (whom i would like to see the first octavian come back) and the inevitable strife and conflict that would follow. i am seriously considering cancelling my hbo, really, rome was only reason i was keeping it. they better do something fast or i’ll spend my time watching network!

Rome’s cancellation was not good. We had a show that was historical, educational, and fun to watch. Rome offered a glimpse into the past and the present. Many people whom did not know history became aware of ancient Rome’s history through watching the series. Rome will definitely be missed. Hold your heads viewers.

Whilst I enjoyed the series (mostly), I was disappointed with some of the gross distortion of facts & even worse, the complete invention of facts. (Octavia, for example - what were they thinking?). I know I know, it’s necessary at times for an interesting story but I think they went overboard. Also, the sex scenes were mostly pointless, boring & sometimes surprisingly dumb - as were the ‘humour’ Pullo & Vorenus scenes which almost put me off the show but luckily, they stopped that towards the end of season 1. ‘I Claudius’ is superb in comparison, even to this day.

I don’t agree with Tom either. If you read any Robert Graves books you would see how interesting Tiberius, Claudius and Caligulas years were. Not to mention the Octavian years, the wars in Germania, the victories of Germanicus ect. I am extremely sad to see a show like this put off.
It is true that it had a lot of problems but it was by far the best show I have ever seen. My whole family watched it that including my grandparents.

Want to know why ROME was cancelled? Because people likes crap and they got crap. See this:
Ratings Report: 17.5 Million Watch Jason Dump Melissa on The Bachelor.
Who the f… cares?
Another one:
MTV and Bunim-Murray Productions announced yesterday that the 22nd season of The Real World will begin production in Cancun, Mexico.
Twenty f…ing season of that crap and ROME got cancelled after just two?
Even another:
ABC ANNOUNCES THE CELEBRITY AND PROFESSIONAL PAIRINGS FOR THE EIGHTH SEASON OF “DANCING WITH THE STARS” PREMIERING ON MARCH 9 ON ABC
And yet another:
America’s Next Top Model Delivers Week to Week Growth in Viewers and 18-49; Top Model Ranks Second in Adults 18-34 and Young Women; Tops NBC and ABC in Adults 18-49 and Viewers
MODEL Scores Second Largest Audience of the 08-09 Season
I don’t know you, but I’ll start visiting my local library more often. Maybe it is for a good reason this happens. Stupid people will get crap down their throat and smart people will get smarter by reading more.
Caesar gave the plebs wine and circus, new times require new techniques. Perhaps marijuana and reality shows?

To me it seems that T.V has gone to hell, leading me to watch DVDs and Youtube instead. I don’t have HBO but I always wanted to see Rome so when I saw a DVD on sale of the 1st two episodes I bought it and watched it. I don’t remember the last time if ever being excited to see a T.V series and eventually dishing out 80 bucks to get the DVD because of only 2 episodes.
To think that people would rather watch American Idol, Grays Anatomy and a butload of other stupid crap rather than an well put and well made show like ROME. With a beautiful cast, great characters, and exciting episodes ROME will go down as one of the greatest shows in T.V history.

I disagree with HBO’s short lived Roman History.
Emperor Augustus instituted many reforms in the city
and throughout the empire such as allowing females to
own property and updating the city fire codes from wood an mud bricks to stone brick and marble temples. He made Rome at least a safer place.
