Dancing with the Stars

“America’s Favorite Ballroom”
All of the stars had an opportunity to dance for a second time this evening. Tomorrow night the first couple of the season will be sent home (with Jimmy Kimmel making a guest appearance! - I agree that seems kinda random). There are three couples who are prime candidates to be enjoying an all expenses paid trip home tomorrow, Clyde & Elena, Billy Ray & Karina, and Leeza & Tony. Tonight they men and women performed different dances, the quick step for the men and the mambo for the ladies. Here’s how they did:

Apolo Ohno & Julianne Hough
Apolo and Julianne did way better than last week. Obviously they found a little more time to practice this week. Although Apolo did look a little stiff to me. The judges all thought they did better as well. Len even thought they would stay for “weeks and weeks”.

Shandi Finnessey & Brian Fortuna
Shandi definitely needs to loosen up more. Her dancing was good, but didn’t really standout. Fortunately for her she is really hot and that will probably be enough to keep her around for a while. Maybe thatreprieve will give her enough time to really get her dancing together. The judges thought her routine was tough and thatbecause of thatshe was too focused on the mechanics of dancing as opposed to really selling the routine.

Clyde Drexler & Elena Grinenko
I thought these two were awful. Clyde is just too big and goofy for ballroom dancing (like I’m an expert, right?) He just seems awkward. I just don’t feel like he even had a chance at a quick step. Again the judges said they thought he did better, that he was smooth, and that he had over come the height problem but, I’ll tell you what their scores didn’t show that. I still believe he is one of the first to go home.

Leeza Gibbons & Tony Dovolani
Leeza is the perfect example that attractive does not equal elegant. Leeza is definitely attractive but more cute than sexy. She looked like a soccer mom who took a few lessons. When she was dancing she was behind music. My prediction is Leeza is out mid-pack. I don’t see her having a shot at winning. The judges thought it was good and precise but that she didn’t really let go. I think Bruno said it best when he described her as a debutant on her first date instead of a tramp. This seemed to be a theme for the women. For the most part the judges just didn’t think the women really put out the sexual heat needed to dance the mambo well. PS: Happy Birthday Leeza, apparently she turned 50 today.

Ian Ziering & Cheryl Burke
Ian and Cheryl put in a good solid performance. Cheryl as always looked great. Ian wore this ridiculous fake smile throughout the entire performance. He sort of looked like he should be a member of the Van Trapp family from the Sound of Music. The judges liked it and felt it was good although the didn’t really heap a lot of praise on them. The judges seemed to feel that Ian was a little too bouncy or hoppy (I’m guessing those aren’t official ballroom dancing technical terms). Even though they’ve only done OK to this point, I can’t help but feel they are still real contenders.

Paulina Porizkova & Alec Mazo
Paulina really didn’t seem too comfortable to me. She might have a touch of the Clyde-Drexler-I’m-Too-Tall-To-Ballroom-Dance syndrome. I thought Alec spent more dancing around her than with her. The judges thought she did well. The complimented her on her grace and form but, the also could tell this sort of dancing didn’t feel natural to her and told her to let go more. Again they would have preferred a more “raunchy” performance for the mambo.

Billy Ray Cyrus & Karina Smirnoff
Billy Ray Cyrus was just not meant to dance (at least not ballroom). Granted he did way better than last week but, come on, that isn’t saying much. He moves like a linebacker. I’m not sure what he was doing while he was dancing. He may have been singing along to the Johnny Cash tune or more likely he was counting the beats out loud. I definitely thought he looked like he had to concentrate super hard to remember the next step. The judges named Billy Ray and Karina most improved since last week. But it ain’t gonna help. Warm up the bus for these two.

Heather Mills & Jonathan Roberts
These two did quite well. The judges praised them for the level of difficulty in their routine. Suprisingly they only mentioned her missing leg once or twice in passing. And I hate to say it, but I will. When you watch her dance, its with the same fasination that you watch a NASCAR race. You’re waiting for the crash.

Bruno Tonioli: 8
Total: 24

John Ratzenberger & Edyta Sliwinska
Go Cliffy! When they started the routine, I groaned. It kinda looked like Jerry Springer round 2. I was convinced that Cliffy was just to old and slow for a quick step. But damn it, if he didn’t pull it off. It may have been just a hair slower than the other guys, but, it was a great routine. I really enjoyed it. The judges agreed, they used terms like “Pizazz”(sp?), “plenty of life”, and “you sold it!”

Bruno Tonioli: 7

Laila Ali & Maksim Chmerkovskiy
If I didn’t know better, I’d swear she was a dude. Did you hear her voice? Not that I would say that to her face, because she could kick my A$$. Part of it is when she dances. For me, she moves like an athlete instead of gracefully like a dancer. The judges loved her. She finally gave them the raunchy performance they were looking for. Len said it was the best mambo of the night. Bruno (who is seriously in love with Laila) called her the “Mistress of the Art of Seduction.”
Carrie Ann Inaba: 9
Len Goodman: 9
Bruno Tonioli: 9
Total:27

Joey Fatone & Kym Johnson
Once again, typical Joey Fatone, super tacky and yet really good. Joey and Kym did a little act at the start of the routine which didn’t impress anyone (neither did Joey’s tux with a rhinestone J and F on the tails). Once they actually started dancing they were incredible. I thought they did the best of any of the couples tonight. The judges loved their dancing.
