Weekend Movie Preview: March 30 - April 1, 2007

Thankfully we’ll have a calmer weekend as far as movie options. Last week there were 6 new releases I had to write up and find trailers for. I passed out after about 4 of them and had to pay a third grader to finish off the list for me. Did he do alright? I hope so. Either way, we’ve got 3 great options this time around with another Ferrell comedy, a Disney animated movie, and some sort of teenage bank heist film. So it’s pretty well rounded. Get all the details and trailers here every week because we care. I can’t get into what we care about. The important part though is that we care. Here are your new movie releases in the theater for this weekend, March 30 - April 1.

Also, it’s not too late to enter our contest to win a linkback.

Blades of Glory

Blades of Glory
Director: Josh Gordon, Will Speck
Starring: Will Ferrell, Jon Heder, Amy Poehler
Rated: PG-13 for crude and sexual humor, language, a comic violent image, and some drug references
Plot: In 2002, two rival Olympic ice skaters (Ferrell and Heder) were stripped of their gold medals and permanently banned from men’s single competition. Fast forward to the present day, where the duo has found a loophole that will allow them to qualify as a pairs team.
My Take: I’m a huge Will Ferrell fan, so he can do nearly no wrong in my eyes. My concern here is that Jon Heder is a little out matched for playing duel leads. He was great in Napoleon Dynamite and all, but he just isn’t on the whole “Frank the Tank” level. Owen Wilson is in every buddy movie out there, but someone like him would have brought a higher level of quality for me. I hope he can pull it off though instead of pulling it down.

Meet The Robinsons

Meet the Robinsons
Director: Stephen J. Anderson
Starring: Daniel Hansen, Wesley Singerman
Rated: G
Plot: A boy genius named Lewis (Fry) has his latest invention, a “memory scanner,” stolen by the nefarious Bowler Hat Guy. Just when he’s given up hope he’ll ever retrieve his creation, he meets Wilbur Robinson (Fox), a curious young fellow from the future, who invites him to travel forward in time to meet his eccentric extended family (who really need Lewis’s help), hunt down the thief, and perhaps learn a secret or two about his own past.
My Take: There are so many of these computer animated movies come out these days. Many of them get lost in the mix, but this one doesn’t look too bad. With a G rating this should satisfy the needs of children everywhere. The video below is more of preview than a trailer, so you’ll get lots of details.

The Lookout

The Lookout
Director: Scott Frank
Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jeff Daniels, Matthew Goode
Rated: R for language, some violence and sexual content
Duration: 1 hr. 42 min
Plot: A once-promising high school athlete (Gordon-Levitt) finds his life altered following a tragic accident. As he tries to maintain a normal life, he takes a job as a janitor at a bank, where he’s targeted by a crew of locals who are looking to pull off a heist.
My Take: I read a review where it said this movie was already being mislabeled as a Memento-Lite knockoff. It kinda looked that to me, so good to know it’s not. I haven’t seen Gordon-Levitt in anything since 3rd Rock, and I wasn’t a big fan there. I’ll pass on this one, but maybe it’s more your kind of thing. Take a look at the trailer and let me know if I’m wrong.

So there they are, your 3 new releases this weekend at the theaters. If you see any of them come back and let us know how they are. Have a great, movie-filled weekend.

  1. Weekend Movie Box Office Round-up: March 30 - April 1 | Wild Bluff Media : Entertainment Examined

[...] No surprise here that Will Ferrell’s new release, Blades of Glory, took the #1 spot at the box office this weekend. Blades of Glory took in a healthy $33M beating out the 2 other new releases, Meet the Robinsons and The Lookout. I guess it is a little surprising that the family friendly, Disney movie Meet the Robinsons didn’t earn more than $25M. Maybe they just didn’t hype it enough though. I saw plenty of commercials for it but hadn’t a clue about its premise until I watched the Meet the Robinsons’ preview trailer. [...]

[...] you’re looking for a good comedy instead check out last weekend’s Will Ferrell movie, Blades of Glory. I’d highly recommend it. For this week though, I’d choose Grindhouse over the others, [...]
