Sanjaya Malakar is proving to be invincible this season on American Idol. No matter how badly he sings, how strongly the judges slam him, or how many children he makes cry nothing seems to bring him down. Has Sanjaya even been in the bottom three yet since we’ve reach the final 12? I have a hard time believing that his “fans” could possibly be impressed with his performances. So what has kept him alive in this competition for so long? I suspect it’s the grassroot efforts springing up everywhere across the Internet.
Nearly everyone knows about sites like VoteForTheWorst.com where they are focusing all of their force behind rallying votes this season for, of course, Sanjaya Malakar. They’ve been around for several years now and have quite a resume:

More recently there has even been a great push by Howard Stern to keep the Sanjaya torture going each week. He has admitted to be doing this just for fun and has even offered to stop if the American Idol producers contact him and make the request. There’s no way the producers would want to kill this level of attention though. It’s gotta be great for their ratings though, so I wouldn’t be expecting that call to happen.
So where’s the next big grassroots effort going to come from? I’m guessing it’s over at SanjayaFanNetwork.com. I came across this site while trying to spread the good word of our American Idol Charity. They’ve got things going pretty strong so far with 236 registered users. Most impressive though is that they’ve already been mentioned by Mr. Radio himself, Howard Stern. Kinda tough to not get interested in checking it out with that sort of endorsement. Best of all, I think these are serious Sanjaya fans, bless their hearts. Most places are supporting Sanjaya out of the sheer pleasure they get by torturing America. Not the Sanjaya Fan Network though, they really want him to stay for him. That’s a bold move.
Can nothing stop this kid? It’ll happen, but it’ll definitely take a lot more time.

I don’t know whether or not American Idol would pay a “fan” to break down into a big hot tear stained mess for a quick money-shot / Cowell quip combo, but considering the possibility that little-miss pigtails might be standing on the side of the street, even as I type this post, waiting for the mailman to deposit a big fat check into her mailbox has led me to ask myself two questions.
One: Having established that chomping off my pinkie finger for a cool mil is out of the question for me, if I were offered a sum of money to shed a tear for Sanjaya on American Idol (a show that kinda makes me vomit in my mouth a little bit as I flip through the channels), would I take it? And how much would it take?
And two: Regardless of their respective orientations — Pro/Anti Sanjaya — Does that chick have any legal sisters? Maybe/maybe not… it’s a little hard to tell from the clip above. Maybe you’ll have better luck than me.
