Tonight American Idol will showcase the final, top 8 singers for Season 6. The musical coach this week is Jennifer Lopez, and with her comes a Latin theme. Jennifer Lopez confesses to be a true American Idol fan and is excited to be there and helping the contestants. She won’t reveal who, but she does have her favorites amongst the crowd of eight. Lopez is certainly an engaging performer, so hopefully she’ll be able to really get these contestants going tonight. The Latin theme should provide for quite a fast paced, exciting night.

Here are the songs the Top 8 contestants sang, the judges commentary, the 1-866 numbers, and the text to vote numbers for American Idol tonight:

Melinda Doolittle: “Sway”
Jennifer Lopez is encouraging her to show her sexy side, which Melinda believes will be a real challenge as she says she is not sexy. Her performance is great. I was totally wrong about her possibly not finding a groove in the Latin theme. She does, however, look like she’s about 45. Actually, I think this is the lady that played the grandmother on “Everybody Loves Raymond”!
Randy: “Check it out… Another solid performance. Not saying it was your best, but it was a solid performance.”
Paula: “Very sultry, very smooth… Subtle and sexy and beautiful.”
Simon: “It had to happen, I didn’t like it… You appeared much, much older than you are… Someone as good as you has got to put on a Wow performance… A bit lazy, little bit wooden. I think you’re better than that.”

Text “VOTE” to 5701

LaKisha Jones: “Conga”
Jennifer Lopez is doing a pretty good job of actually giving direction and coaching her with some dance/performance moves.
Randy: “Check it out. You were having a good time. You made it your own. It was hot.”
Paula: “I didn’t feel it as much as Randy did… A real safe LaKisha… It’s getting down to the wire… I want you to push for it.”
Simon: “I agree with Paula. It’s quite a safe song to do. The dancing wasn’t very good.”
Vote#: 1-866-IDOLS-02
Text “VOTE” to 5702

Chris Richardson: “Smooth”
Jennifer thought the song was too low, so she encouraged him to take it up a step. He chose a very tough song to take on and now has to compete with Rob Thomas’ version. I’d have to say he is not pulling this off.
Randy: “Check it out… You did a really good job… Very cool.”
Paula: “It was a hot performance.”
Simon: “Not the best vocal I’ve heard, but I preferred it to the first two singers… It was a good performance.”
Vote#: 1-866-IDOLS-03
Text “VOTE” to 5703

Haley Scarnato: “Turn the Beat Around”
Well, if you were waiting to see more of Haley’s legs you weren’t let down. She definitely puts a lot of energy into her performances, she’s not boring.
Randy: “Dude, that was really karaoke for me… I could have been anywhere.”
Paula: “It’s not a singer’s song, but it’s a fun song. I think you had fun up there.”
Simon: “I think you have a very good tactic Haley, wear the least amount of clothes… All you can do is have fun… The vocals were so rushed.”
Vote#: 1-866-IDOLS-04
Text “VOTE” to 5704

Phil Stacey: “Maria Maria”
Phil gave Jennifer Lopez goosebumps, so let’s see what he does for the audience. Geez Phil, get rid of the hat. You look like someone’s grandpa that just came off the golf course. Phil put a lot of energy into it, but it didn’t come out as his best.
Randy: “You didn’t quite connect with the passion… Kinda boring.”
Paula: “I thought it was real good vocal.”
Simon: “You’re a nice guy… No originality in the performance… Your voice cracked in the end… Nothing to get excited about.”
Vote#: 1-866-IDOLS-05
Text “VOTE” to 5705

Jordin Sparks: “The Rhythm is Gonna Get You”
She’s got a really strong performance. I had been kinda doubting people saying she’d win this season, but she might have a real chance at this.
Randy: “Absolutely great… You got it… Yo factor on blast.”
Paula: “You’re so authentic… Just out there having a great time.”
Simon: “They’re okay performances. Nothing stunning… I haven’t seen a progression tonight.”
Vote#: 1-866-IDOLS-06
Text “VOTE” to 5706

Blake Lewis: “I Need To Know”
What the hell is with the hats and these guys? The hats are dead. K-Fed ruined hats years ago. Leave them be. You look ridiculous.
Randy: “Check it… Best song choice of the night.”
Paula: “Very smart performance. Captured who you are.”
Simon: “Best performance of the night so far.” Huh?
Vote#: 1-866-IDOLS-07
Text “VOTE” to 5707

Sanjaya Malakar: “Besame Mucho”
Oh crap. I think Sanjaya hit puberty last week. He’s sporting an absurd little mustache and some stubble on his chin. He just looks like a little cartoon character to me.
Randy: “You’re one of the smartest contestants I’ve ever met… That was good.”
Paula: “It was very, very nice.”
Simon: “I couldn’t understand a word of it. You sang like a fourteen year old. I’m going to hate myself for this, but it wasn’t terrible.”
Vote#: 1-866-IDOLS-08
Text “VOTE” to 5708

I thought that the triad (Melinda-LaKisha-Jordin)only did a mediocre job tonight. Phil was awful. Chris did OK. Blake was without a doubt the best performance of the evening. Despite what Simon said, I thought Haley did a great job tonight. Actually as much as it pains me to say this so did Sanajaya. He had the look (minus the keds)and he finally had the voice. He actually sounded male this week.

    Performances I enjoyed the most:
    1. Blake
    2. Haley
    3. Sanjaya (ouch)

One last note, JLo did a great job.I thought that for once the star of the week actually provided some useful feedback to the contestants.
