Weekend Movie Preview: April 13 - 15

Another big stack of movies coming out this weekend, 5 new ones in total and none of them are “family friendly”. A few violent themes, a few thrillers to choose from, and a car movie if that’s your thing. Last weekend’s movie releases really bombed at the box office. Just like last weekend, if you’re looking for a comedy instead of these options I’m still going to recommend the Will Ferrell movie, Blades of Glory. I’d highly recommend it.

Also, it’s not too late to enter our contest to win a linkback.

Disturbia

Disturbia
Director: D.J. Caruso
Starring: Shia LaBeouf, David Morse, Carrie-Anne Moss
Rated: PG-13 for sequences of terror and violence, and some sensuality.
Duration: 1h 44m
Plot: A teen (LaBeouf) living under house arrest becomes convinced his neighbor (Morse) is a serial killer.
My Take: This looks like a teeny bopper attempt at a thriller, murder-next-door movie. It might not be too bad, but I doubt we’re going to be breaking any new ground here.

Pathfinder

Pathfinder
Director: Marcus Nispel
Starring: Karl Urban, Clancy Brown
Rated: R for strong brutal violence throughout.
Plot: A Viking boy is left behind after his clan battles a Native American tribe. Raised within the tribe, he ultimately becomes their savoir in a fight against the Norsemen.
My Take: I’m surprised this didn’t get more marketing publicity. I only remember seeing a few commercials for it. It looks like another testosterone packed action movie with lots of swords and more.

Perfect Stranger

Perfect Stranger
Director: James Foley
Starring: Halle Berry, Bruce Willis, Giovanni Ribisi
Rated: R for sexual content, nudity, some disturbing violent images and language.
Plot: A journalist (Berry) goes undercover to ferret out businessman Harrison Hill (Willis) as her best friend’s killer. Posing as one of his temps, she enters into a game of online cat-and-mouse.
My Take: I always enjoy Bruce Willis and Halle Berry isn’t too bad either (acting and looking!) so this one has some potential. It’s a thriller with lots of twists promised for the audience. It could either go really well or turn out to fizzle out quickly with obvious plot turns that leave no one unsure of what’s coming next as I’m a little nervous it will do. Prove me wrong Bruce!

Redline

Redline
Director: Andy Cheng
Starring: Nathan Phillips, Nadia Bjorlin, Eddie Griffin
Rated: PG-13
Duration: 1h 35m
Plot: A group of drivers find themselves caught up competing for a large cash prize in an illegal drag race from Los Angeles to Las Vegas.
My Take: This plays out a lot like another Fast and the Furious movie. Lots of hot cars with lots of cool crashes. So if those were your kinds of movies then you’ll likely love this one too. Plenty of publicity around this movie a few weeks ago when Eddie Griffin crashed the film producer’s $1.5 million Enzo Ferrari, or did he? People suspect it was faked as you can see in the video the owner didn’t even flinch at the moment of impact.

Slow Burn

Slow Burn
Director: Wayne Beach
Starring: Ray Liotta, Jolene Blalock, LL Cool J
Rated: R for sexuality, violence and language.
Duration: 1h 33m
Plot: An assistant district attorney (Blalock) goes to an extreme in an effort to make her case against a gangland kingpin, leaving a mess for her boss (Liotta) to clean up as he eyes the city’s mayoral seat.
My Take: I think this may be a limited release so you might not get it where you are. If it is near you, I’m still not sure if I’d highly recommend it. It’s got a short run time and I’ve never found LL Cool J to be a great actor. So it’s got a few things that are setting up flags for me. I’m no film critic though, I just play one on this site, so feel free to ignore my warning. There’s plenty of sensual appeal if that’s what you’re seeking…

Check back on Sunday for our weekend movie roundup where I’ll take a look at the box office earnings and who won our weekly contest. Feel free to take a guess yourself as well.
