Sleeping Dog Lie is going to be one of the most talked about films this year. Melinda Page Hamilton plays Amy, a beautiful young elementary school teacher who leads an idilic life. Until her perfect fiancee, played by Bryce Johnson, decides that they, should share their deepest, darkest secrets with each other. You know, in the interest of trust and honesty, to deepen their relationship. You can probably see where this is headed. Who thinks this is a good idea? Its not. Amy reveals her secret and of course he can’t deal with it. She apparently spent a little intimate time with the family dog (look at the movie poster again now). As the movie progresses everyone in the family has a dirty little secret and they come out one by one. It is interesting to see how their revelations are dealt with by the characters.
Sleeping Dogs Lie, was written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait. Now don’t roll your eyes and stop reading. Yes, Bobcat can be annoying and his standup routine isn’t for everyone (present company included) but, in addition to being extremely irritating, he is also very intelligent and perceptive person. This movie provides an insightful look into how people deal with honesty and their perception of honesty versus the reality of it.
I suspect Sleep Dogs Lie will not get a wide distribution, but will do well in large markets and especially well on DVD. It reminds me of 9 1/2 Weeks and the Secretary, in that everyone will want to see this film, but no one will want to be seen seeing this film.
