Update: You can see tonight’s Top 3 Performance Show Recap here.
We’re approaching the finish line here on American Idol 2007 as we’re about to get the Top 3 Performance Show tonight. Our remaining contestants: Blake Lewis, Jordin Sparks, and Melinda Doolittle will battle it out tonight for the rights to enter the finale show next week. Last week we saw LaKisha Jones exit stage right as she took the #4 place for the season. LaKisha did a great job, but I don’t think too many people were surprised by her lowest ranking last Wednesday.
Tonight’s performances will not be guided in the usual fashion as there won’t be a musical coach this week. Instead we’ll get the musical genius of Clive Davis joining the show. The song selections will be handled a little differently as well. Each contestant is having three songs tonight, so we’ll get even more performances than we did with 4 people doing 2 songs last week. Yikes, that’s a lot!
Here’s the breakdown on tonight’s songs: the first song will be the contestants’ choice. The next song will be from the judges’ (Randy, Paula, and Simon) choosing. The third and final song will be from the mind of Clive Davis. This should certainly be interesting. I’m expecting the best selections, based on the individuals performing, will be from Clive Davis. He’s been doing this a lot longer than the rest of these folks and should really know how to match songs with abilities. Now as far as the rest of the judges: Paula is probably trying to get all of her picks to be drinking songs. Randy will want as much “Yo yo yo dawg” in the lyrics to peak his interest. And who knows what Simon wants as he often says he’s never heard of half of these modern songs.

I’m expecting the ladies to really shine tonight as usual. They’re so similar in styles and genres that it’ll be tough to really separate out the two. I’m definitely hoping for another ‘on’ night from Jordin, unlike Bon Jovi night, because she deserves to do well and get recognized for it. Melinda is so consistent with her performances that I doubt we’ll see anything less than excellence from her. Then there’s ol’ Blake with whatever it is he does up there on stage. Yesterday I said I think Blake Lewis should beatbox his little heart out because I think he’s coming to the end of the road. At least he’ll give me plenty of things to write about tomorrow.
Don’t disappoint us Top 3. You’ve come a long way to get here and you’ve had a lot of supporting fans. Be sure to hold on to that fan base and you’ll keep shining for another week. Tonight we’ll see if they live up to their responsibilities as the semi-finalists or not. Get ready for a long, song filled show with thankfully little filler as there just won’t be the time for it. Afterwards, check back here at Wild Bluff Media for the recap and the rest of your American Idol coverage.
What do you think? Am I right? Am I wrong? Let me know, I’d be interested to hear.

I think you will be wrong.
I think Blake is much better then you give him credit. I also think he’ll do well, with “Roxane”.
His voice has a soft, lilting quality to it, that will be perfect. Sting’s voice is slightly more raspy.
To tell you the truth, I’m totally bored with Melinda. It was like “The Melinda Doolittle” show for quite a while, but now? Yawn…
I still like Jordan, though her demeaner gets to me at times.
However I feel about it, We will all have to wait until the end of the show.
Good luck all!

I’m certainly glad you’ve enjoyed Blake’s performances and I know you’re not alone as he’s still here. But I’d still put hard money on this being his own finale show.
I honestly believe he tries to compensate for, and hide, his weaker vocals by doing the special audio effects rather than singing. I thought that back when he first reached Hollywood and was in the group performance. The other 2 or 3 guys all sang the song and he stood back and beatboxed instead. I was amazed at the time that he didn’t cut there since he didn’t actually sing.
Melinda really has been consistently strong in her performances and some may find that boring, and that’s just fine too. Personally I’m grateful for her consistent performances as it’s been a resting spot for me between the other sometimes rocky singers.
If I had to pick a cd off the rack to listen to it’d still be Miss Doolittle, hands down.
