Tonight we’re down to our final three contestants on American Idol Season 6: Blake Lewis, Jordin Sparks, and Melinda Doolittle. Each performer will get the chance to get up there and belt out three final songs in their attempt to reach next week’s finale show and the Top 2. The song selections are a little off from what I detailed earlier, I apologize for feeding you bad information on that and I’ll be more careful to verify my rumor mill resources better next time. Instead of Clive Davis selecting songs we simply hear that one of the three songs will be selected by “the producers”. The other two songs will be selected by the one judge for each of the performers and then by the performers themselves. With 9 songs coming at us in a short period of just 60 minutes there won’t be much time at all for filler, so let’s get right to it.
Round 1: Judge’s Choice
Jordin Sparks: “Wishing On A Star”
This song was selected for Jordin by Simon. Jordin is having a great performance with plenty of energy and it’s well delivered.
Randy: “That was a very good vocal… little Beyonce.”
Paula: “Simon picked a good song for you… You did a great job.”
Simon: “You sang it brilliantly… I wish we hadn’t done the wicked jazz arrangement with it… Wasn’t actually one of your better performances.”

Blake Lewis: “Roxanne”
Paula selected this song for Blake and it’s a good choice as Puff Daddy remixed this song years ago. All Blake has to do is go back and listen to that, just like his computer program that remixes for him, and that regurgitate it right back. Great.
Randy: “Yo yo yo… Check it out… I liked the whole thing with one hand on the mic stand.” What?? “All in all I gotta give you an A on that, it was hot.
Paula: “You did me proud… I thought you did fantastic… I loved it.”
Simon: “I’m not going to call it earth shattering… Not as good as the original… It was good, but it wasn’t great.”

Melinda Doolittle: “I Believe In You and Me”
WTF? Randy picked a Whitney Houston song for Melinda. This comes from the same man that season after season says, “Don’t try to do a Whitney Houston song”. Is he trying to torpedo her?? At the end of Melinda’s video with the Tennesse governor she says, “Thank you Randy Johnson”, which is obviously wrong (Jackson, not Johnson). So I went back and rewatched this and it was actually the governor who first called him Johnson and Melinda was just playing along. Anyways, as tough as doing a Whitney song is Melinda proves that she’s very capable of handling it. No matter who wins next week it’s still obvious to me that Melinda Doolittle is the most talented singer of this bunch.
Randy: “Check it out, check it out, check it out… If she can do this she should get the grand prize… You blew it out of the box… Very well done.”
Paula: “You were fantastic… One of your best performances this season.”
Simon: “Very, very difficult song to sing. Your best performance in the last few weeks. Round 1 goes to Melinda.”

Simon declares that Round 1 goes to… Melinda Doolittle
Round 2: Producers’ Choice
Jordin Sparks: “She Works Hard For The Money”
Jordin is handling the producers’ selection very well and that’s no surprise. I’m not thrilled with it, but it’s certainly not bad.
Randy: “Very nicely done… Doesn’t matter what song you do.”
Paula: “You worked hard for the money tonight.”
Simon: “It was a very good performance… Very good.”

Blake Lewis: “This Love”
This was definitely a good selection by the producers for Blake. It was right down his alley and he did well with it. Wow, did I just say that?
Randy: “Very nicely done.”
Paula: “Totally in your element.”
Simon: “I preferred that one to the first one… Sounded very comfortable… That was good.”

Melinda Doolittle: “City Limits”
I do not like this song. I think she got stuck with a stinker here.
Randy: “Another great, stellar performance for you… I like that.”
Paula: “Looks like you had a blast… We love you.”
Simon: “Love that side of you… Again, another brilliant performance.”

Round 2 goes to… no one, it’s a tie, according to Simon, but according to Randy it was… Melinda Doolittle, again.
Round 3: Performer’s Choice
Jordin Sparks: “I, Who Have Nothing”
We get a flashback video of Jordin getting a star at her mall where she had her first job. She’s 17! What, like her first job 6 months ago? Jordin is getting really dramatic for this performance. This was a repeat performance for Jordin from earlier in the season.
Randy: “Another great performance… I think it was your best performance of the night.”
Paula: “It sat well in your voice… Sounded great.”
Simon: “You sang that very well… I hated the fact that a 17yr old was singing a 60yr old song… I wish you had chosen another song.”

Blake Lewis: “When I Get You Alone”
I was enjoying it right up till the last minute, and then you can just guess what he di-d-di-did.
Randy: “It was cool… I liked the Maroon 5 more… It was alright, it was alright.”
Paula: “Exemplifies who you are as an artist… Three great songs.”
Simon: “I actually really liked that… You don’t play it safe, you take a risk… You look like you’re having fun.”

Melinda Doolittle: “I’m A Woman”
Jordin may have gotten a star in the local mall, but we find out that Melinda got a street named after her. This is also another repeat performance from earlier in the season for Melinda.
Randy: “I’m seeing the range of Melinda Doolittle and that was hot again.”
Paula: “You’re stepping out into the spotlight… Fantastic.”
Simon: “Loved the little striptease at the top… If I’m going to award the place in the final to the person who is consistently delivered week after week it’s you.”

Quickly before the show completed Ryan Seacrest did a quick quiz on the judges for their opinion on the results from tonight’s show. Looks like all the judges (I’m just going to stop counting Paula’s babbling) are sharing a similar perspective to my own here.
Judges’ predictions for the results show:
Randy: “I think it’s going to be two girls if it’s based on singing.”
Paula: “I think all 3 are so diverse…” Oh shut up Paula, you continue to be completely useless at these things. Just have a damn opinion already.
Simon: “I want to see my girl Melinda in the final.”
