It’s been three years since we’ve had a new Mike Myers movie (Shrek 2 in 2004), and that’s way too long for me. But thankfully he hasn’t just been getting extra sleep the whole time. Myers is coming back with a lot of new movies and roles to keep him busy and us satisfied for several years to come.

Most notably are his plans to return to the Austin Powers series with a fourth installment. This time the movie will be from the perspective of Dr. Evil rather than our usual British hero, Austin. When the third movie, Goldmember, was delivered in 2002 I heard rumors that Myers would not be attached to another sequel and instead would hand the story off to Dr. Evil’s estranged son, Scott, as the new generation took over. Clearly that either wasn’t true, or Myers wasn’t ready to give away his baby. I’m thrilled to get another movie in this series and am equally relieved that it’ll be something new as the previous stories were getting somewhat tired. Okay, Dr. Evil is telling me to www.zip it.com, so on to the next topic.

There is also, of course, his other keystone film series, Shrek, which has its third installment coming out this Friday with Shrek the Third. I thought the second one was better than the first, so I’m hoping for continued gains. But I swear, if this takes a third round nose dive like that crap Spider-Man 3 I’ll be ticked off. I’m guessing we’ll be safe though as there are already plans, you guessed it, for a fourth film which is only in “announced” stages and scheduled for a 2010 release.

If you’re more interested in something entirely new from Mike Myers he’s got you covered there as well. This August he’ll begin filming on a new franchise (Wow, already expecting it to be a franchise and he hasn’t even begun filming the first one.) with his character, “The Love Guru“. Hmm, I wonder if fellow SNL alumni Tim Meadows will show up at his door in his Leon Phelps garb with a reminder to tread lightly.

Discussing the new character, Myers revealed, “It’s about a Canadian boy who was left in an ashram in India, grows up to become a guru and is hired by the Toronto Maple Leafs to win the Stanley Cup,” he grinned. Myers added that his co-stars for the movie will be hired over the next few months, and he’ll continue developing the Dr. Evil flick in his spare time.

Looks like we’ve got several good Mike Myers years to come here. I’m excited.
