Here are your new movie releases on DVD for Tuesday, May 15, 2007:

Pan’s Labyrinth
Starring: Ariadna Gil, Ivana Baquero, Sergi López, Maribel Verdú
Genre: Drama, Fantasy, Thriller
Details: In 1944 fascist Spain, a girl, fascinated with fairy-tales, is sent along with her pregnant mother to live with her new stepfather, a ruthless captain of the Spanish army. During the night, she meets a fairy who takes her to an old faun in the center of the labyrinth. He tells her she’s a princess, but must prove her royalty by surviving three gruesome tasks. If she fails, she will never prove herself to be the the true princess and will never see her real father, the king, again.
Notes: Won 3 Oscars. Another 52 wins & 51 nominations. I missed this in the theaters despite getting great personal reviews from friends. I was told it had a stomach turning scene of violence though, so be prepared.

Stomp the Yard
Starring: Columbus Short, Meagan Good, Darrin Dewitt Henson
Genre: Drama, Musical, Romance
Details: After the death of his younger brother, a troubled 19-year-old street dancer from Los Angeles is able to bypass juvenile hall by enrolling in the historically black, Truth University in Atlanta, Georgia. But his efforts to get an education and woo the girl he likes are sidelined when he is courted by the top two campus fraternities, both of which want and need his fierce street-style dance moves to win the highly coveted national step show competition.
Notes: Having seen live performances of Stomp it’s some pretty cool stuff.

The Fountain
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Rachel Weisz, Ellen Burstyn
Genre: Action, Drama, Romance, Sci-Fi
Details: Spanning over one thousand years, and three parallel stories, The Fountain is a story of love, death, spirituality, and the fragility of our existence in this world.
Notes: I usually go for these weirdo, sci-fi, wild storylines but after the reviews I read this movie did not seem to be as good as I thought it might. IMDB readers rated it as 7.7/10, which isn’t too bad. I’ll add it to my movie queue, but it won’t get bumped to the top anytime soon.
