Tonight’s episode of “On the Lot” presents the Box Office Results where we see the crowd dwindle down from 18 directors to just 15. Yesterday’s show delivered all 18 director’s comedy shorts as this week’s theme was aimed at drawing the laughs. The judges on tonight’s panel were: Carrie Fisher, Garry Marshall, and guest judge D.J. Caruso, director of Disturbia. Apparently Brett Ratner has stepped out and away from the show after it came up with disappointing audience results, allegedly.
Don’t forget host Adrianna Costa, who I mistook for a complete rookie. Apparently Ms. Costa is a “veteran entertainment news anchor” according to Zap2It. Adrianna’s deliveries were awkward and she repeatedly stumbled over her lines, including her very first line of the show as well as fumbling Carrie Fisher’s last name. I suspect she was selected for her tangible assets as Garry Marshall put it, “we loved your dress”. So to sum up the basis of tonight’s show: 18 contestants, 3 losers, and 0 bras for the hostess.
The scandalous moment for this week was Jason’s comedic short, “Getta Rhoom“, where he claimed he meant to have his protagonist be a nerd. Instead of appearing as a nerd the character with thick glasses, rounded face, and slurred words clearly appears to have Down Syndrome. Not exactly “hilarious” as director Jason intended. Jason stood by his film and says he never intended for that to be the impression for audiences. Sure.
So on to the results. The remaining 18 directors were split into 3 rows, 6 in each. Each row was announced to hold a member of the Top 3 directors for that week and 1 of this week’s losers. Starting in the back row Adrianna announces that Zach’s short, “Danger Zone” is in the top 3. It then comes down to either Marty or Carolina and then after a few awkward pauses from Costa, which I suppose were intended to be suspenseful we find out that Carolina is going home. Her short, “Deliver Me“, was deemed a dud although it wasn’t terrible. It was sad though to see a Verizon cell phone plug in it, the very same phone that we see in the commercial breaks. Ah well.
The next row reveals that Will’s comedic short, “Lucky Penny” is in the Top 3. It’s not too bad, but reeks of an old Looney Tunes episode: falls down a man hole, hit by a bus (and then rides along on front of it), and piano drops on his head. The dueling reveal for this row comes down to Kenny and Claudia. Another awkward pause from Adrianna and we learn that the second female director is heading home. Claudia’s short, “Blind Date“, has yet another blatant Verizon cell phone plug and it just goes down hill from there. Farting on the toilet isn’t too funny, especially when it’s a woman, because everyone knows women can’t fart (this is what my wife tells me). I didn’t think “Deliver Me” was so bad, but this one was definitely “send home” worthy.
The final row poses three contestants against each other: Jason, Phil, and Jessica. Since we already know Jason’s “Getta Rhoom” gave him trouble from the judges your lead to expect more trouble for him tonight. Instead his short earns him a spot in the Top 3. So now it’s either Phil or Jessica that will be sent home. Nearly hitting a hat-trick and sending home three female directors we instead learn that Phil is on his way out. Phil’s directorial effort with “Please Hold” turns into yet another plug for LG’s new cell phone. Wow, there’s even a close-up of the Ford emblem on her keys. Before being sent off stage D.J. Caruso tells Phil that he should be doing thrillers and I think he’s right. He had a good eye for the short, but it was just not funny, way too dark instead.
So tonight we learned a few things. First, Carolina, Claudia, and Phil didn’t make the cut into the next round. Second, putting an unnecessary product placement in your short is the kiss of death this week. Lastly, “veteran entertainment news anchor” apparently means “large chest in a skimpy dress”. Interesting. If you missed the rest of the videos from Monday night you can watch them all online. I’d recommend “Dance Man” by Adam Stein.
