Weekend Movie Preview logo

It’s movie time again. This weekend we’re finally being spared the trilogy films and are diving into several good looking options. I’ve been in the mood for a good comedy and Knocked Up looks to deliver there. Then there’s a dark thriller with Mr. Brooks starring Kevin Costner, William Hurt, and cradle-robber Demi Moore (I kid, I kid). If you’re more into some of those ol’ sports stories then there’s even one for you with Gracie. There’s one more that you might not get, but should totally see, Day Watch. It’s a Russian remake and looks freakin’ awesome. It’s a limited release, but I’ve included it for its awesome factor. Alright then, hope you have a great weekend. Thanks for stopping by Wild Bluff Media this week!

Here are all your movie details & trailers for this weekend, June 1 - 3.

Knocked Up

Knocked Up
Director: Judd Apatow
Starring: Seth Rogen, Katherine Heigl, Paul Rudd
Genre: Comedy
Duration: 2 hrs. 9 min.
Rated: R for sexual content, drug use and language.
Plot: Allison Scott is an up-and-coming entertainment journalist whose 24-year-old life is on the fast track. But it gets seriously derailed when a drunken one-nighter with slacker Ben Stone results in an unwanted pregnancy. Faced with the prospect of going it alone or getting to know the baby’s father, Allison decides to give the lovable doof a chance.
My Take: I really enjoyed 40yr Old Virgin, which was made by the same team and several of the same actors (Rogen, Rudd, etc.). This has gotten really strong reviews so far, out of 11 critics, only one didn’t give it an A and that one was a B+. If you want to goof around today (on your lunch break, not company time of course!) then check out the Knocked Up Baby Maker game.
Knocked Up Movie Trailer:

Mr. Brooks

Mr. Brooks
Director: Bruce A. Evans
Starring: Kevin Costner, Demi Moore, William Hurt
Genre: Drama, Thriller and Crime/Gangster
Duration: 2 hrs.
Rated: R for strong bloody violence, some graphic sexual content, nudity and language.
Plot: Consider Mr. Brooks: a successful businessman; a generous philanthropist; a loving father and devoted husband. Seemingly, he’s perfect. But Mr. Brooks has a secret–he is an insatiable serial killer, so lethally clever that no one has ever suspected him–until now. Earl Brooks is a man who has managed to keep his two incompatible worlds from intersecting by controlling his cunning, wicked alter ego.
My Take: I had actually been really looking forward to this as the cast is strong (except for that worthless Cook guy) and the story looked nice and dark, but the reviews are anything but encouraging. As such I’ll probably let this one slide to rental. If you see it though, let us know.
Mr. Brooks Movie Trailer:

Gracie

Gracie
Director: Davis Guggenheim
Starring: Carly Schroeder, Andrew Shue, Elisabeth Shue
Genre: Drama and Sports
Duration: 1 hr. 32 min.
Rated: PG-13 for brief sexual content.
Plot: Set in 1978, a teenage girl overcomes the loss of her brother and fights the odds to achieve her dream of playing competitive soccer at a time when girls’ soccer did not exist. Living in South Orange New Jersey, 15 year old Gracie Bowen is the only girl in a family of three brothers. Their family life revolves almost entirely around soccer: her father and brothers are obsessed with the sport.
My Take: I’m neither a fan of those historical sports pieces nor soccer, so I’m probably not one to give a recommendation here. The trailer does look pretty good though, so it may be worthwhile if you’re a soccer fan.
Gracie Movie Trailer:

Day Watch

Day Watch
Director: Timur Bekmambetov
Starring: Konstantin Khabensky, Mariya Poroshina, Vladimir Menshov
Genre: Art/Foreign, Science Fiction/Fantasy, Adaptation and Sequel
Duration: 2 hrs. 19 min.
Rated: R for violence.
Plot: A horror tale set in contemporary Moscow that revolves around the conflict and balance maintained between the forces of light and darkness–the result of a medieval truce between the opposing sides. This ancient war between the forces of Light and Darkness is reaching a tragic outcome. Each side has gained a powerful Great Other, who are headed for a clash, and Anton Gorodetsky is once again caught.
My Take: This looks very slick to me and reminds me of the whole Matrix/Underworld theme of movies. If you enjoyed those I’m willing to wager you’ll like this one too.

Night Watch, the prequel to Day Watch was very good. I’d suggest seeing it first as this one might not make a lot of sense without the backstory. Surprisingly, it was almost equal parts action/horror flick and philosophical examination of the repercussions of sin/evil. You don’t run across that every day . . .

Ahh. I thought this was just the remake of that into an English friendly version. I wasn’t too quick on my translation of “Nochnoy dozor”.
