Jordin Sparks Blake Lewis

Blake Lewis may not have won American Idol Season 6, but he’s certainly winning the race this week. Blake Lewis’ cover of Bon Jovi’s hit “You Give Love A Bad Name” has broken into the U.S. singles chart’s Top 10 at the #9 spot. So where does that leave this season’s winner Jordin Sparks? You won’t find her in the Top 10. Climb a few spots down the charts and you’ll see her sitting pretty at #14 with “This Is My Now”.

I know I upset a reader last month by stating that just because you win doesn’t make you the biggest star of the season, but this seems to already be demonstrating that idea. So kudos to Blake Lewis and his daring move with his performance of Bon Jovi’s song as it has really paid off. I might not be a Blake Lewis fan, but I easily recognized it as one of our Top 10 Events of American Idol Season 6.

I’m a huge Blake fan and I’m not at all surprised to see him break out in the top 10! I never doubted for a moment that Blake would out sell Jordin as he’s an amazingly talented musician with an established vibe. He knows exactly who he is and he’s fearlessly true to that. In contrast, Jordin is just a sweet kid w/a big VOICE. It remains to be seen whether or not she establishes her own identity as an artist.

He has certainly had a few extra years over Jordin to get that identity established. I’ll also be interested to see where she goes over the next few years.

good for him! i thought he’ll be falling into oblivion since there isn’t much news about him going around these days. i hope this achievement will help him get a record deal! or has he one already?

  4. Matt

That’s a great question. I’m not sure if he’s already got a record deal. I will have to search around and see what I find.

last year Taylor after the season ended was higher than Kat and Chris in top charts… then what happened? he faded.. i forsee the the same for Blake…

  6. Matt

That’s an interesting point and certainly isn’t impossible. I’ll look forward to seeing how their summer sales continue.

In an Seattle radio station interview today Blake says that he has a deal in the works with Entertainment 19 but he hasn’t officially signed yet. I’m glad he’s taking it slow and being careful. Taylor Hicks was higher than Kat and Chris at the end of the AI season last year only because as the winner he was instantly promoted by the AI machine! Chris had immediate offers but, like Blake, he took his time and made sure that he got a deal that would allow him to perform his own music and be true to his own style. It’s paid off in a big way, yes? Blake’s been in the business for a long time and I don’t think he’s going to sacrifice his musical integrity for a quick deal. He strikes me as being pretty happy in the indie/underground scene. I think he can shoot the moon if he wants to!

I wouldn’t really agree that Taylor and Kat have “faded”. They certainly don’t have the same level of fame & “success” as Daughtry but they’re both out there selling their music. I’m not sure that Taylor even sought to have the mass appeal of Daughtry. He’s more of a club singer. I think Blake can hit a Daughtry like high if he wants to but I think that would require some sacrifice of his style and his whole indie/underground roots - and I don’t think he’ll do that. If he can get that big (if that’s something he even wants to do) without making those kinds of sacrifices, more power to him! He’s a brilliant musician and performer and seems like such a genuinely nice guy! I wish him nothing but the best!

Well that is great to know the details. Good for Blake. Like you said, he’s been working hard at this for a long time.

I think you are forgetting something. It was Taylor’s crappy coronation song that topped the charts due to fans buying the physical single multiple times. Chris Daughtry’s version of Wanted Dead or Alive was actually the most downloaded song from last season. And, Taylor was never “current”, would never fit in on pop radio. Blake is a different story. And he is outselling Jordin without a multiple buying frenzy or additional press. Good for him. If the top 3 from this season all release albums, my crystal ball (which works 90% of the time) tells me that their sales would be as follows:
    1) Blake - radio ready and marketable
    2) Melinda - great voice, niche market potential
    3) Jordin - Katharine McPhee without the sex appeal

I just call them as I (and Simon Cowell) see them.

So happy to know we weren’t all crazy to believe in Blake! We knew he could do it!

[...] So Sparks’ album will be out in November, but her first single will hit the air waves in just a little over a week. I’m interested in seeing if this can catch her up to Blake Lewis who was ahead in the singles chart back in June. [...]
