Pirate Master Banner

Last week we finally got a change of pace with JD getting knocked from his pirate throne by the new captain, Azmyth. Despite Jay’s efforts to get Cheryl to walk the plank it was Alexis who was set adrift. After watching tough guy Christian getting the pirate boot the week before I was wondering if the crew would start voting based on high sea value or not. I was happy to see Alexis head out on the raft because she really didn’t seem to be cutting it as a pirate anymore. Her “can’t do” attitude was wearing thin and despite her claim that it was other people’s problem if they didn’t like her it turned out to be her’s. It looks like the pirate crew may have decided to start voting by value, but will it continue?

Let’s take a look at who is left of the crew and how they rank against one another in Pirate Master Worthiness as we enter Week 4:

#13 - Joy: Why the crew voted off Christian instead of her is lost on me. After “busting” her knee Joy slowed her team down so much they never had a chance to catch up in Week 2. She’s already been sea-sick and doesn’t seem to show much enthusiasm except when she’s on the chopping block. She’s definitely a great talker then and that’s saved her so far. I’m expecting her crew to wake up very soon and see that she’s adding nothing to the game and just dragging them down.

#12 - Laurel: Last week Laurel got played most as a pawn, at least it appeared that way. She hasn’t really gotten a lot of air time which means she likely hasn’t really been helping or hurting her team too much. Laurel seems like a nice girl, but if she’s not pulling her weight and showing her worth her crew will have little use for her.

#11 - Nessa: Nessa is getting lost in the mix for me so far. I haven’t witnessed her heavy involvement in any of the treasure hunts, which may or may not be due to editing. But if we’re not seeing much of her in the races and the producers aren’t sensing her as a major player then the rest of the crew may start to feel the same way before too long.

#10 - Christa: Christa has been doing a decent job of getting herself at least mingled in with the efforts on the hunts. She’s also been doing a good job of getting her chest blurred out several times before. If Christa can get into the game a little more she might even get the chance to flirt her way through a close call in the Pirate Court.

#9 - Kendra: I believe Kendra has made a very valuable buddy with Louie. We’ve seen them spending some chat time together, so if push comes to shove she might be able to get Louie to do some of his big talking and get her off the plank. Kendra did have some trouble swimming the other week, which is never good for a pirate. If it becomes a bigger issue again Kendra could easily be set out to sail.

#8 - Ben: If this was a war movie, Ben would be the first one shot right after telling everyone about his plans to marry Peggy Sue when he gets back home to Iowa. His bio says he has mastered Kung Fu, but nothing about him comes across intimidating or as a leader. Even as an officer with at least some influence and power he seemed weak to me. I think he’ll like sneak along for a few more weeks but when it comes down to him or two other crew members I don’t think he’ll have the lifelines available to get pulled back in.

#7 - Joe Don (JD): Oh tyrannous JD, how you survived multiple opportunities by the crew to call for a mutiny amazes me. Starving your team, working them tirelessly, and happily scooping up your unearned treasure is certainly one way to play the game. However, it won’t be the way to win it. You’re tough, which should keep you going, but you’ve made too many enemies too fast.

#6 - Jupiter: Her ability to blend and adapt to the group is serving her well so far. She must be making a good impression, especially on the guys, to allow her the chance to give everyone some make-up jobs. While she’s well accepted and appreciated amongst the teams I just don’t see her being tough enough to make it all the way.

#5 - Louie: Everybody loves the “jolly fat man” and Louie fits that role well. His emotions change with the tide, so he isn’t likely to get too hung up on the day to day events, leaving his tableau ready to start over each morning. I’m expecting his eagerness to conform and willingness to trust to be his downfall. When Louie hits that raft I doubt he’ll have even seen it coming.

#4 - Azmyth: Last week they could have renamed the show “Everybody loves Azmyth”, except it’d have to be a British version considering his new accent. Azmyth definitely lead his team to victory in Week 3 just like he did in Week 2. Not only that, but his generous decision to split the money more evenly than JD ever did earned him a lot of respect amongst the crew members. I’m concerned that his “peace, love, and harmony” approach may prevent him from taking on the cut-throat attitude and alliances needed to win.

#3 - Cheryl: Cheryl is tough and it should serve her well. She already escaped a near vote-off and will likely have learned plenty to correct her course in the game. As she’s mentioned many times before her abilities from her life as an attorney will likely provide her the negotation tactics necessary to survive. Unfortunately she’s already developed some game enemies early on and I think those will come back to haunt her.

#2 - Jay: He’s a car salesman. He’s trained to talk people into things and he’s already shown that he can do a good job of pulling it off. We’ll have to see just how many enemies he makes though as the seas look rough ahead between him, JD, and Sean. One thing is for sure, he’s got the right attitude to make it far in this type of game: “Lie, make alliances, and lie to your alliances.”

#1 Pirate Master - Sean: This is a tough guy, a team player, and the rest of the crew seems to sincerely like him. His role as team cook is going to be invaluable as we’ve seen that angle work for plenty of contestants in other reality competition shows. Sean stepped up and carried Joy when she busted her knee which showed his willingness to selflessly help the team. However, he might have made a big mistake last week when he went against Jay’s vote request, especially after accepting a bribe to do it. Jay is going to be angry about the way he voted and the rest of the crew is likely to be jilted by the fact he was taking bribes for votes. I think it’s early enough to get over these mistakes, but Sean will need to buckle down if he wants to win this competition.

Things are going to keep changing every week, so this was a tough list to make. Do you see things differently? Have I totally misread a character or underestimated another? Let me know, comment below. I’d be interested to hear.

  1. Pirate Master Recap - (Episode 4) 6/21/07 | Wild Bluff Media : Entertainment Examined

[...] The Black crew reaffirms Azmyth’s initial reaction and decides the treasure must be back at the anchor. Obviously the Red crew had zero luck during all this time while Black was away. Now both crews are frantically digging around the anchor and Christa shouts that she’s found the treasure. Oops, unless the treasure is a rock she didn’t find it after all. The digging continues until… Red crew finds the treasure buried deep beneath the anchor. Well that’s good news for Joy as she would have been the top pick for the plank walk tonight, just like I had predicted. [...]
