The summer of sequels is on a semi-break this weekend as we have 2 all new films and 1 which is kind of a sequel, but doesn’t carry over any characters other than the Big Guy himself. Coming off a very strong opening I’m expecting Fantastic Four to retain its number one position again this weekend. I’m definitely going to get out there and see Stephen King’s new film from this bunch as I always enjoy those, even the bad ones. Alright then, hope you have a great weekend. Thanks for stopping by Wild Bluff Media this week!
Here are all your movie details & trailers for this weekend, June 22 - 24, 2007.

1408
Director: Mikael Håfström
Starring: John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, Mary McCormack
Genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy, Suspense/Horror, Thriller and Adaptation
Rated: PG-13 for thematic material including disturbing sequences of violence and terror, frightening images and language.
Duration: 1 hr. 34 min.
Plot: Renowned horror novelist Mike Enslin believes only in what he can see with his own two eyes. But after a string of best-sellers discrediting paranormal events in the most infamous haunted houses and graveyards around the world, he has no real proof of life–afterlife. But Enslin’s phantom-free run of long and lonely nights is about to change forever when he checks into suite 1408 of the notorious Dolphin Hotel.
My Take: Have I mentioned I’m a Stephen King freak? Cause I am. (I can’t wait for the Dark Tower adaptations!) So I am of course very excited for another Stephen King story turned movie. Best of all this one doesn’t look as cheesy as some of those in the past (especially the made-for-TV versions). Get ready for plenty more Stephen King films as remakes of Creep Show and Pet Cemetery are on their way as well as the first time around adaptation for Cell. John Cusack is always enjoyable for me and Samuel L. Jackson has never really hurt a movie, though I suspect he’ll be underused this time around. Can it take the #1 spot this weekend? I’d be surprised, but hopefully its earnings will be enough to encourage more of these down the road.
1408 Movie Trailer:

Evan Almighty
Director: Tom Shadyac
Starring: Steve Carell, Morgan Freeman, Lauren Graham, Wanda Sykes
Genre: Comedy, Science Fiction/Fantasy, Politics/Religion and Sequel
Rated: PG for mild rude humor and some peril.
Duration: 90 min.
Plot: Newly elected to Congress, the polished, preening newscaster, Evan Baxter, is the next one anointed by God to accomplish a holy mission–walking in the footsteps of Bruce Almighty. Evan leaves Buffalo behind and shepherds his family to suburban northern Virginia. Once there, his life gets turned upside-down when God appears and mysteriously commands him to build an ark. But his befuddled family just can’t decide whether Evan is having an extraordinary mid-life crisis or is truly onto something of Biblical proportions.
My Take: While I enjoy Steve Carell as much as the next comedy lover I’m not sure where this lands as far as “Bible humor”. The PG rating shows it’s going to end up being very clean and likely a rather family-friendly movie. This is a rather interesting choice for a sequel to Bruce Almighty, which wasn’t a big favorite of mine in the first place. I read that Universal will have to bring in about $250 million to break even on this one. Yikes! Looks like they might need a miracle of their own.
Evan Almighty Movie Trailer:

A Mighty Heart
Director: Michael Winterbottom
Starring: Angelina Jolie, Dan Futterman, Irfan Khan
Genre: Drama, Adaptation, Biopic and War
Rated: R for language.
Duration: 1 hr. 43 min.
Plot: On January 23, 2002, Mariane Pearl’s world changed forever. Her husband Daniel, South Asia bureau chief for the Wall Street Journal, was researching a story on shoe bomber Richard Reid. The story drew them to Karachi where a go-between had promised access to an elusive source. As Danny left for the meeting, he told Mariane he might be late for dinner. He never returned. In the face of death, Danny’s spirit of defiance and his unflinching belief in the power of journalism led Mariane to write about his disappearance, the intense effort to find him and his eventual murder in her memoir “A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband Danny Pearl.” Six months pregnant when the ordeal began, she was carrying a son that Danny hoped to name Adam. She wrote the book to introduce Adam to the father he would never meet.
My Take: This movie likes a very interesting and important film, but I think its deep and sad topic may be too much for me to catch in the theater. I would like to eventually see it though and will add it to my Netflix queue as it comes available.
