On a recent trip to the Inca city of Machu Picchu in Peru Cameron Diaz sported a satchel bag plastered with a political slogan of Mao Zedong, the former leader of the Chinese Communist Party. The slogan, “Serve the People” is especially offensive to the citizens of Peru as CBC detailed:
The words have particular resonance in Peru, where the Maoist Shining Path movement terrorized citizens during the 1980s to early 1990s with a deadly campaign of bombings and massacres. Nearly 70,000 people died during that period.
When Diaz was made aware of her blunder she quickly switched over to her “Heil Hitler” and “I Love Satan” tote bags instead. Then she issued the following statement to Associated Press:
“I sincerely apologize to anyone I may have inadvertently offended. The bag was a purchase I made as a tourist in China and I did not realize the potentially hurtful nature of the slogan printed on it.”
Ignorance is never an excuse.

Sheesh! That is pretty stupid! I wonder what made her buy and carry such an ugly bag in the first place? Oh and did you see her whole outfit? Couldn’t she afford something a little more fashionable? Not that she needs to be decked out all the time, but since she is such a public figure, shouldn’t she wear something more put together.

Yeah, I don’t know what she’s thinking. I wouldn’t be so quick to buy things with foreign languages plastered across them that I didn’t understand. It could have said, “I’m a tourist. Rob me!”

I would never buy something without knowing the true meaning! What was she thinking? Living in the orient I was always careful what I bought. It could have said stupid American on it…..

In a way her bag did say exactly that, just in different words.
