“Yes. We’re gonna have go right to… ludicrous speed.” One of the funniest movies of all times returns this fall to the small screen. Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs has been turned into an animated series by MGM TV and will air this fall on Comcast’s G4. The series will kick-off with a one hour pilot followed by 13 half-hour episodes. Spaceballs, which was originally released in 1987, became a cult classic over the next decade on cable and DVD.
It’s disappointing that the show will only be on G4. While G4 technically has 59 million subscribers the number of them that actually watch G4 is probably pretty small. This unfortunately also makes me question the quality of the series since none of the bigger cable networks, like Cartoon Network, picked it up. One thing that gives me hope is that Mel Brooks and one of the other writers from the originally movie, Thomas Meehan, wrote the pilot and Meehan was involved in writing the rest of the series. Mel Brooks will also do the voices of President Skroob and the Yoda-like Yogurt as well. If only they could have gotten Rick Moranis back too that would have been cool.
