Big Brother 8

BB8 Mike

Last night on Big Brother 8 we saw Mike take an early exit from the game in what was the first really dumb move of the game. In his attempt to prove his trustworthiness Mike stuck out his neck and drew the fire of Dick. Unfortunately for him the fire was heavier than he anticipated and Mike quickly became the new target of his fellow house guests. The voters were just a little less divided than the past two weeks with two votes against Kail, who stayed, and seven against the departing Mike. So what lead to Mike’s downfall, other than the obvious event? Let’s take in a look in our usual “three strike” approach.

First strike against Mike’s game play was his most recent, and unfortunately biggest misstep. During Tuesday’s Power of Veto competition Mike allowed himself to be talked into fiercely supporting Kail against HoH Dick. Mike’s first strike here isn’t so much that he pissed off Dick, but rather that he decided undying loyalty was somehow necessary. Kail’s ship was heading down, there was no stopping it, but Mike jumped right on for the ride anyway. Loyalty is definitely important in this game, but you must be able to recognize a lost cause. If you need to prove your loyalty do it in some non-lethal method rather than getting yourself put on the block. Sheesh. Come on Mike. How did that possibly sound like a good idea? Strike number one: staying loyal to a fatal fault.

Following up one bad move with another was Mike’s eagerness to join an alliance. Mike was part of the first day alliance, Mrs. Robinson, and it could easily be decided that no good came out of the rushed grouping. While his desire to belong to a group as soon as possible it was just too early on to make that sort of decision. Just as quick as that group gathered it also disbanded but not before doing damage to all it members to varying degrees. Nick threw his teammates “down the bus” (thanks Dick, I won’t get tired of that) first with his admission to Daniele, Zach let loose the secret at some point too, and then worst of all was Kail selling everyone out to Dick in a CYA move. This second strike was the clear path to Mike’s first strike of undying loyalty to that rushed alliance. Had Mike avoided this grouping I think it’s easily seen that he never would have found himself in that position of giving more than he was getting. Strike #2: hasty alliances yields early demise.

The third and final strike against Mike could be summed up by Dustin’s going away message last night. After three weeks in that house Dustin knew 4 things about him. Mike was definitely not a people person in the Big Brother house. Instead of moving around and playing the crowd he stuck to a very small niche of people. Again, I’m looking at his decision to join that early alliance and discard all other attempts at making allies. If Mike had bothered to spend more time with people and at least built up some superficial friendships people might not have had such an easy time giving him the boot. Not only was Mike slow to make friends he was also slow to make any memorable events in the house prior to his PoV show this week. I kept wondering when the show was going to put a little focus on him, but it never really happened. Strike number three: hiding and failing to forge friendships. That’s three, Mike. You’re out.

Here is Mike’s interview with Julie Chen this morning on The Early Show:
