I was very surprised to hear that Leonard Nimoy, 76, would be returning to the role of Dr. Spock in JJ Abrams upcoming addition to the Star Trek franchise. This next film in the series will be the 11th installment and I hoped it would inject some fresh air. Returning to the old, literally, cast seems to be doing just the opposite. At some point they’re going to need to give up and move on from these guys. I guess in a way they sort of will be doing that, just in more baby steps than I’d like.

Nimoy will be joined by Heroes villian Sylar, Zachary Quinto, in the role of Dr. Spock. Quinto, who seems like a perfect casting fit due to his appearance, will be taking over the “young Spock” angle. No word yet on who will be playing the young Captain Kirk, though rumor has it Shatner will also be back to support the role.

JJ Abrams certainly seems to have a full plate these days with his Project Cloverfield / Monstrous coming out in early January, Lost returning in February, and then this Star Trek movie scheduled to release on Christmas day. There’s little doubt for me that this will be a high quality film, but please, please let it be the last with the original cast. When Nimoy spews Spock lines like he has a string in his back it’s time to stop:

One fan asked Nimoy what he thought of his “replacement.”

“It was logical,” the actor said dryly. He then closed with Spock’s classic line: “Live long and prosper.”

Oh good gravy. Really? I mean really? Did you have to do that? Have you no dignity?

Dr. Spock is a child psychologist… Mr. Spock was a Sci-Fi character… And who cares if they utilize one original cast member…. Trek fans are the most demanding… You would be a fool not to utilize an original cast member in some small way…..
