This is going to be one busy movie weekend as there are a total of six wide releases and nearly that many limited releases. I think you’ll be able to find something for nearly every audience except maybe the youngest of kids. You’ve got a good looking action movie with War starring Jet Li and Jason Statham. There’s a romantic comedy with Scarlett Johannson and Chris Evans (Sunshine). Mr Bean is back in a G rated silly movie that his fans should enjoy. I’m also interested in the sports drama, Resurrecting The Champ, with Samuel L. Jackson and Josh Hartnett. The last two look pretty bad to me though: September Dawn and Illegal Tender. Dawn looks poorly done and boring while Tender looks just plain dumb. If you see any of these come back and let us know what you thought.
Here are all your movie details & trailers for this weekend, August 24 - 26, 2007.

War
Starring: Jet Li, Jason Statham, Nadine Velazquez
Director: Philip G. Atwell
Genre: Action / Thriller
Rated: Rated R for sequences of strong bloody violence, sexuality/nudity and language.
Duration: 1hr 43mins
Plot: An FBI agent (Statham) wedges himself in a conflict between a Triad boss and Yakuza chief in order to suss out the assassin (Li) who killed his partner three years ago.
My Take: I’m not expecting a lot out of the storyline on this one, but the action should be awesome with these two at the helm.
War Movie Trailer:

The Nanny Diaries
Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Laura Linney, Paul Giamatti
Director: Shari Springer Berman, Robert Pulcini
Genre: Comedy / Drama / Romance
Rated: Rated PG-13 for language.
Duration: 1hr 45mins
Plot: A college student (Johansson) goes to work as a nanny for a rich New York family. Ensconced in their home, she has to juggle their dysfunction, her studies, a new romance, and the brat in her charge.
My Take: This one doesn’t look like anything groundbreaking, just another romantic comedy starring a nanny with a troublesome kid. I’m going to pass on this one unless my better half tells me otherwise.
The Nanny Diaries Movie Trailer:

Mr. Bean’s Holiday
Starring: Rowan Atkinson, Willem Dafoe
Director: Steve Bendelack
Genre: Comedy
Rated: Rated G for brief mild language.
Duration: 1hr 30mins
Plot: Mr. Bean (Atkinson), a curious, bumbling, nearly silent chap, travels to the south of France for a holiday, where his video diary somehow winds up as a world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
My Take: I never saw the original Mr. Bean, but I enjoyed Atkinson in Rat Race where he appeared to play the same sort of character. I imagine this one will be simple, silly, and family friendly with a G rating.
Mr. Bean’s Holiday Movie Trailer:

Resurrecting the Champ
Starring: Samuel L. Jackson, Josh Hartnett
Director: Rod Lurie
Genre: Drama / Sport
Rated: Rated PG-13 for some violence and brief language
Duration: 1hr 51mins
Plot: Searching for his big story, a young newspaper reporter (Hartnett) encounters a homeless man (Jackson) he thinks is a former champion boxer — a man forgotten by fans and believed to be dead.
My Take: While the base idea of someone young uncovering someone thought lost in the past isn’t new I think this looks like it could be a really good movie. Hartnett and Jackson should make for a great combo on screen and I’m interested in seeing how they do together.
Resurrecting the Champ Movie Trailer:

September Dawn
Starring: Jon Voight, Trent Ford, Tamara Hope
Director: Christopher Cain
Genre: Drama / Romance / Western
Rated: Rated R for violence.
Duration: 1hr 50mins
Plot: A group of settlers en route to California encounter a Mormon sect in southern Utah; the massacre that follows results in the deaths of 120 people, before it is covered up by prominent religious leaders.
My Take: While historical pieces are usually pretty interesting to me I’m not sure how accurate they can make a movie when it’s supposed to be about hidden events. I’ve also heard the movie to be pretty poorly done with the acting, directing, etc. I’m going to pass on this one.
September Dawn Movie Trailer:

Illegal Tender
Starring: Rick Gonzalez, Wanda De Jesus, Dania Ramirez
Director: Franc. Reyes
Genre: Crime / Drama / Thriller
Rated: Rated R for violence, language and some sexuality
Duration: 1hr 48mins
Plot: While on the run from a crime boss’s henchmen, Wilson De Leon Jr. (Rick Gonzalez) learns from his mother (Wanda De Jesus) the secrets of his murdered father’s past — a revelation that ultimately sends the young man to Puerto Rico, seeking his revenge.
My Take: I hadn’t even heard of this one until this week. Looks like another mobster shoot ‘em up to me and a pretty terrible one at that if you watch the trailer. Although it does have Spanish (Gonzalez) from Old School in the lead role. I don’t think it’d make Tank proud.
