Weekend Movie Preview logo

Sorry kids, this weekend’s movies belong to the adults. Thankfully there are just three new releases unlike last weekend’s massive six movie debuts. Hopefully at least one of these will be good as all of those stunk. First up is the vigilante justice movie with Kevin Bacon and John Goodman, “Death Sentence.” This one is on top of my viewing list and if you don’t mind what’s likely to be a pretty violent film I’m hoping it’s going to be worth checking out. Talking about violence segues us right over to the remake of John Carpenter’s classic “Halloween” by Rob Zombie. Zombie is well known for his vicious romps through cinema and this should provide a much higher profile for his efforts over the past few movies he’s put out. I think I’ll wait for this one to be out on DVD around Halloween as I just can’t bring myself to watch Halloween in August. Lastly you’ve got a silly comedy with “Balls of Fury” starring Dan Fogler and Christoper Walken. I was nearly on board for this one, but after dumping so much money into watching disappointing movies in the theater I think I might wait for this one on DVD. If you see it and love it then let me know and I might catch it after all.

Death Sentence poster

Death Sentence
Starring: Kevin Bacon, Kelly Preston, John Goodman
Director: James Wan
Genre: Action / Drama
Rated:R for brutal violence and pervasive language
Plot: Nick Hume (Kevin Bacon) is a mild-mannered executive with a perfect life, until one gruesome night he witnesses something that changes him forever. Transformed by grief, Hume eventually comes to the disturbing conclusion that no length is too great when protecting his family.
My Take: This is top on my weekend movie priorities. I nearly always enjoy Kevin Bacon and I definitely like the vigilante movies, so put those two together and I’ll buy a ticket.

Halloween poster

Halloween
Starring: Scout Taylor-Compton, Malcolm McDowell, Tyler Mane
Director: Rob Zombie
Genre: Horror
Rated: R for strong brutal bloody violence and terror throughout, sexual content, graphic nudity and language.
Duration: 1hr 49mins
Plot: After being committed for 17 years, Michael Myers, now a grown man and still very dangerous, is mistakenly released from the mental institution (where he was committed as a 10 year old) and he immediately returns to Haddonfield, where he wants to find his baby sister, Laurie. Anyone who crosses his path is in mortal danger.
My Take: I really feel like remaking Carpenter’s Halloween has got to be some sort of film sin. However, if someone could likely do it justice it’d be Zombie. My biggest hang up here is why the heck didn’t they wait until Halloween to release Halloween?! Um, hello, anyone out there? Anyways, kudos on getting McDowell to step in as the doctor.

Balls of Fury poster

Balls of Fury
Starring: Dan Fogler, Christopher Walken, Maggie Q
Director: Ben Garant
Genre: Action / Comedy / Crime / Sport
Rated: Rated PG-13 for crude and sex-related humor, and for language.
Duration: 1hr 30mins
Plot: Down-and-out former professional ping-pong phenom, Randy Daytona (Fogler), is sucked into a maelstrom when FBI Agent Ernie Rodriguez (Lopez) recruits him for a secret mission. Randy is determined to bounce back and win, and to smoke out his father’s killer — arch-fiend Feng (Walken).
My Take: I thought about seeing this one in the theater, but I think it might be better served at home where I can enjoy it with a few beers.
