I’m not sure Nicolas Cage could even solve the not-so-much-a-mystery of what killed the Magnum P.I. movie if he ends up starring in it. The rumor mill is swirling with the idea that Nicolas Cage may be taking over the Magnum P.I. movie project ditched by George Clooney and Ricky Gervais (as sidekick Higgins). This kind of movie news makes me cramp up inside. It’s not that I hate Nicolas Cage as I’ve enjoyed him in several movies over the years, but I’m sick of seeing him applied in some duct-tape fashion. “Oh no, we can’t get Johnny Depp for Ghost Rider. Let’s get Nicolas Cage.” Or maybe, “oh no, we can’t get Lady Dench to reprise her role as M in Bond 22. Let’s get Nicolas Cage.” Dammit studios, cut it out! IGN is reporting the details:
Reports have circulated everywhere from Star Magazine and The Daily Express to MonstersAndCritics.com that Cage is considering playing Thomas Magnum, a role originated by Tom Selleck on TV, in the Universal movie.
According to The Daily Express, “Nicolas likes the mix of comedy and crime-solving in the script.” The paper also claims that the project fell apart 18 months ago when Ricky Gervais rejected the notion of playing Higgins to George Clooney’s Magnum.
The story goes that, should Cage sign on, casting will then commence for the role of Higgins, Magnum’s Brit sidekick. The film would reportedly be due out in 2009.
Um, here’s an idea. Why not just get Selleck back for the role? We’ve got Harrison Ford coming back for Indiana Jones 4 and he’s 136! Selleck is only 62 and Hallmark movies can’t possibly fill his entire schedule. I’d sooner go see Selleck back in this role than Cage doing his same ol’ shtick.
Thanks to Aaron for his support of seeing Selleck back in this role. Check out Aaron’s site: The American Mustache Institute. You can find some pretty entertaining details.

As the executive director of the American Mustache Institute, we firmly protest Nicolas Cage for consideration as Magnum P.I.
Tom Selleck is a cult hero, largely due to his glorious mustache. Mr. Cage, while a fine thespian having starred in such vehicles as “Valley Girls,” has never to our knowledge been a mustached American.
Bring back Selleck - period.

If anyone out there is reading this - I think you’ll get a huge response if Tom Selleck plays lead roll… It was his baby, let him put it to sleep. Just please, I beg you, don’t put nick cage in this movie.

I totally agree with you. I just saw Selleck back on TV for Las Vegas (taking over for James Cahn) and he looked plenty young enough to do this role. I think it’d be a huge hit with the original man.

Oh Great! Another Hollywood remake stinker like Starsky and Hutch on the way. When is Hollywood going to figure it out??? We like nostalgia, but with the same actors who made the series in the first place. I would love to see the original cast members reprising the roles they made famous, so I can see what these guys have been up to for the last 20+ years. Put Selleck and Co. in the movie, or I’ll have no interest in shellin out $9 for another Hollywood flop. Heck, if the original cast members are in it, I’d even buy the DVD when it comes out.

WE NEED TOM SELLECK. Pfft, seriously. Nicholas Cage looks no younger than our good old Tom Selleck does. I used to think that Matthew McConaughey was going to play Magnum, because that’s what the rumors were. I still didn’t think he could capture the essence of Magnum, but I was thinking that as for appearance, he was a pretty damn good choice. And so, I figured ‘What the hell, I’ll just go watch it and see how it turns out.’ But now that it’s Nicholas Cage being considered, I don’t even think I’ll go watch this movie. Cage is a great actor in his own right, but MAGNUM?! I don’t think so.
I firmly believe that Tom Selleck has what it takes to star in this movie, but I think I know why he isn’t. The studios don’t care about the legions of Magnum fans. As always, money is the only issue here. I’m sure the studios want the movie to appeal to the new generation of movie-goers, and the ‘new generation’ doesn’t even know who Tom Selleck is. HOWEVER, this means they also won’t know what Magnum, P.I. is, so why bother?
TOM SELLECK, JOHN HILLERMAN, ROGER E. MOSLEY, AND LARRY MANETTI ARE THE ONLY ACTORS FOR THIS FILM.

I completely agree. No one is fit to play Magnum other than Tom. And you can’t get anyone better than John, Roger, and Larry. They are timeless!! You can’t just discard them like yesterday’s email. Tom Selleck is the only one who will ever have what it takes to play Magnum. Just look at him. Tom Selleck is Magnum, p.i.!

Dear Sirs,
To contemplate using any actors to re-make Magnum P.I., other than the ORIGIONAL CAST is ABSOLUTELY ABSURD!!!
To illustrate an example, the TV series “Star Trek”, had such a Fan Following that the Movies made afterward utilizing the origional cast, were a big success.
From what I can ascertain, the following for the series Magnum P.I. is increasingly more popular. And the cult following for the series, not only entails a popularity for the characters and the stories, but for the actors who played them, in particular Tom Selleck who leads the cast. It is not only the characters popularity in themselves, but the commaradery between the actors. The general affection the actors have for each other, cannot be duplicated. The perception that the actors like each other, and they have fun doing what they are doing, I have not seen in a TV show since “Barney Miller”.
That is why it would be a crime, if the Magnum Movie is to be made, if it did not use the entire origional cast!!!
sincerely,
Robert N

Tom Selleck is Thomas Magnum….any questions? No? Good!
and I also really like the idea of the same crew being brought back for the movie….
