Big Brother 8

Seeing how this couple, Jessica and Eric, were attached at the hip for everything including their eviction night I thought it’d be fitting to review their game play in unison. First off, last night’s double eviction went exactly as I expected with Jessica blazing the trail and Eric following her breadcrumbs right out to Julie’s couch. Eric came very, very close to snagging the HoH over Dick and Daniele which lead to quite the string of profanity flowing my couch when he screwed it up at the end. That aside, I think it’s safe to say Eric’s game was already as dead at that moment as the game of recently departed Jessica. Although I’ll be examining what went wrong in their game I think it’s worth noting that anyone that has made it this far in the game was clearly doing something right. So with that said, what happened to a couple with such potential in this game? Let’s take a look.

BB8 Jessica

The biggest, glaring mistake came as recently as just last week and ultimately I’d place the blame mostly on Eric. Sitting there in front of this couple was the chance to use Eric’s PoV and replace Amber or Jameka with Dick or Daniele, preferably Daniele. Instead Eric decided against this for two possible reasons. First, I think he was really still believing in the JEDD alliance and their intent to get to the final four together. Secondly, as Eric noted, he knew America would want “Waahmber” evicted so by keeping her on the stage he could snag another easy America’s Player task. Jessica talked with Eric about using it, but he pushed this aside and Jessica immediately knew it was a huge mistake. While I noted I place the majority of the blame on Eric I would also share a small portion with Jessica for not forcing the issue with him. Had Jessica put her foot down and told Eric he’d use it or be damned I think Eric would have folded like a cheap lawn chair outside Amber’s trailer. An eviction of Dick or Daniele last week would have obviously crippled what continues to be the strongest pairing of the season, D&D.

Splitting aside this pair for the moment let’s take a look at Eric’s rushed demise last night. Considering Eric was supposed to be well versed in Big Brother strategy I’m sorry to see he didn’t push harder in his final moments. When Zach pulled the PoV win there was a great potential for a game shifting moment, but Eric let it pass by. He should have immediately gone to Zach and pushed him to use the PoV which would have kept him safe and then remove even Jameka if not Eric. From there Dick would have been forced to put up Daniele then Zach and Jameka/Eric could have voted her out. The biggest obstacle there is that Zach isn’t the smartest game player in the house, so this would have been difficult for Eric to achieve, but why didn’t he even try?

BB8 Eric

Backing up even further Eric seemed to have a deeper issue all season. The boy couldn’t win a damn thing to save his life. Now to be fair, he did win the one PoV, but we already discussed how pointless that was. Now some people would point out Dr. Will never won an HoH and still did quite well. True and fair enough, but the difference was that Kirby had cannon fodder all around him to deflect those attacks. Eric didn’t have that luxury nor the charisma to pull it off. Eric might have known every detail of every season, but he lacked the ability to compete and win in clutch situations. Had Eric been able to get maybe even just one HoH things could have played out very differently, but that’s the whole “coulda shoulda woulda” game.

Since I already tackled the situation of how much America’s Player might have influenced Eric’s game play I’ll leave that alone. So let’s jump back over to Jessica and what she could have done differently. I actually think Jessica did very well in this game and with her two HoH wins she was a very strong competitor along with being well liked amongst the house guests. Those aspects were likely to have made Jessica an even bigger target as she was definitely a threat to the other house guests. I would not want to be competing in a head to head against Jessica or sitting next to her in the finale. I already mentioned Jessica’s lack of pressure on Eric to use the PoV last week, which I think would have likely made her safe this week, as a big source of trouble in her game play. Other than that I don’t think Jessica did too much wrong in her game. When your biggest problem is being too good at the game then it’s hard to complain.

Congratulations to both players for making it this far. I’ve enjoyed Eric and Jessica immensely this season, especially their awkward, middle school-ish relationship. I hope things work out for the two down the road.
