OJ Simpson

In lieu of stretching these out into two posts it’s easier to just wrap together all the past-their-prime celebrity court cases.

First up, O.J. Simpson with quite the string of charges: kidnapping, robbery with use of a deadly weapon, burglary while in possession of a deadly weapon, coercion with use of a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, conspiracy to commit robbery and conspiracy to commit a crime. Simpson’s bail has been set at $125,000 and his lawyer, Galanter, said he expected him to be “processed and released fairly quickly.” O.J. hasn’t entered a plea so far. You can get all the arrest details and hear the audio of the robbery over on this post. More info at Y! News.

Switching gears from robbery to murder you’ve got Phil Spector. Following five months of trial and crazy hair the jury is claiming to be deadlocked:

The jury foreman, a 32-year-old civil engineer, told the judge that he saw little hope of resolving the impasse and indicated jurors were in disagreement about facts in the case, not about the law.

“I believe it comes down to the individual jurors’ conclusions that are drawn from the facts,” said the foreman. “At this time I don’t believe that anything else will change the positions of the jurors, based on the facts that are in evidence.”

He said the panel had taken four votes before reporting the deadlock.

Spector’s defense team initially requested a mistrial based on the jury’s deadlock, but this was denied. The judge is considering sending the jury back with the option of a lesser charge, involuntary manslaughter. Legal experts warn there is a risk of appeals should the judge decide to pursue this option. More info at Y! News.
