Jackie Chan may have broken into mainstream Hollywood with “Rush Hour” back in 1998, but in the nearly ten years since and two additional films Chan still doesn’t get it nor does he like any of them. On his personal blog this weekend Chan explained his motivations for all three, saying the first was to test American waters, the second was for the $$, and the third was for the fans. Considering Chan had already wow’d us with Rumble Bronx three years earlier I don’t understand what he means on the first one. At least he’s honest about the follow-ons though. The Associated Press reports:
“Nothing particularly exciting stood out that made this movie special for me … I spent four months making this film and I still don’t fully understand the humor,” he said, adding the comedic scenes may be lost on Asian audiences.
So Jackie, tell us what you think of your upcoming movie. More good stuff right? Something worth our $10?
“The movie I just shot with Jet Li, ‘The Forbidden Kingdom,’ actually isn’t that great,” Chan was quoted as saying by the Web site of China’s official Xinhua News Agency.
“‘The Forbidden Kingdom’ is a movie made for Americans,” the report quoted Chan as saying. “Chinese viewers may not like it. If I say it’s a good movie now, then many people will be filled with overly high expectations and be disappointed when they see the movie.”
Not so surprising is that AP reran the story without that last blurb in it: shorter article here versus full article here . Both are by the same author, Min Lee, but one was released about 2.5 hours before the other.

I haven’t seen any of them and I like Jackie Chan movies. Maybe it’s that high-pitched voice of his partner (Chris Tucker?). Perhaps I’ll get the first one and see if it’s worth watching.

Chan’s older action movies are great (Rumble, Drunken Master, etc.), but these Americanized ones just never caught on for me either.
Yeah, Tucker leaves a lot to be desired.

There were two Americanized movies that I liked, The Medallion and The Tuxedo. I must have liked them because I remember them (I think I have them on DVD, but I’m not sure). I don’t remember any of the other American movies he made.
