The Goonies

Sean Astin (Rudy, Lord of the Rings) has told MTV that a sequel to the beloved 80’s teen classic “The Goonies” is an “absolute certainty”.

The writing’s on the wall when they’re releasing the [”Goonies”] DVD in such numbers.

Steven [Spielberg] and Dick [Donner] and all the powers that be … they really feel like the thing that made the movie strong was that it was about kids, so they really want to make the next movie about kids…the next generation of Goonies. And they’ve had a hard time tackling that.

I remain as open-minded and willing to participate as I have ever been.

Okay, so now that you’re all pumped up for this here’s the bait and switch. It’s going to be animated. That’s the rumor for now and I’ll be damned if I’m going to go see the Truffle Shuffle in CGI. (Big thanks to Britney for the trip down memory lane though.)

Earlier in August Corey Feldman also talked with MTV about the various plot lines that have been tossed around over the years:

There’s been so many,” he sighed. “The one that I heard that worked the best was all of us were now grown up, and have [our own] kids. And those kids get into some trouble and end up stumbling across some link to our past. They discover who we really are and what we went through. And, simultaneously, the Fratelli brothers find out that the kids have found out – so they’re out to get the kids and the kids are out to save their lives and their families.

That doesn’t sound too bad at all and it makes perfect sense to keep this about the kids rather than out of work actors. But why, oh why do we have to see it animated. The elaborate sets and adventures were such a big part of what made the original so cool and I think it’d be lost in translation to 0’s and 1’s.
