My Review: 28 Weeks Later, the sequel to 28 Days Later, brings you everything you know about zombies and mixes it with everything you’ve already seen about zombies. Okay, so 28 Weeks isn’t breaking any new ground in the realm of the undead flesh eaters but is it exciting and entertaining? Yes and yes. Leading the cast is Robert Carlyle (The Full Monty) as the story takes an interesting approach as we meet our disaster survivors at the same time period as the original movie. Following an intense, shakey cam-filled first five minutes where a rash decision will come back to haunt our protagonist the story (and thankfully the camera) slows back down to a manageable pace. Leap forward 28 weeks and from here on out get ready for your standard zombie fare as 28 Weeks Later sticks more to the action/adventure side of the zombie genre than its predecessor, which pulled you into the characters.
While Carlyle is the biggest face/name you’re likely to recognize here the rest of the cast does a fine job of keeping the story moving right along. The characters themselves aren’t too believable and their deliveries are a bit touch and go as we have the soldier who abandons his post over orders he can’t take and the chief medical officer for the Army that doesn’t look old enough to be an intern. Speaking of youthful touches you’ve got two kids added to the mix that are the real spark to the story. Tag these characters together and you’ve got your adventure as the four of them try to escape the escalating zombie situation in downtown London.
Okay, so the acting was rough and the story is predictable but the action is solid and as a fan of the genre you won’t be disappointed. Considering the sequel was a whole bunch of newbies to the plot I don’t see any reason why we couldn’t get a third installment and I’d be willing to check it out. If you enjoyed the original or just craving some brains to nibble on then 28 Weeks Later is worth the rental.
Rating: 3/5 stars
High Point: Brrraains!
