My Review: I have been a big fan of Ben Stiller’s movies for years, so when I saw he had a new movie out I had to go see it. The Heartbreak Kid is classic Ben Stiller. Stiller plays Eddie Cantrow, a forty year-old bachelor who is socially insecure, and is reeling from watching his fiancee of five years marry another man. He meets a girl who seems perfect but after he marries her too quickly turns into bridezilla on their honeymoon where of course he meets the real girl of his dreams. As I said the plot is classic Ben Stiller. If you likes Along Came Polly or There’s Something About Mary you’ll like this film too.
One of my favorite parts of the movies is Eddie’s dad played by Jerry Stiller, Ben Stiller’s real dad. His character is hilarious, not to mention gruff, rough, and raunchy. Malin Akerman also does a great job playing Lila, Stiller’s wife. I wouldn’t have pegged her as a comedic actress but she can pretty funny. Michelle Monaghan is good as the other woman. Carlos Mencia is awesome as Uncle Tito. Every guy who sees this movie is going to be walking around kidding with his mates just like Uncle Tito.
The movie was very funny. For once they didn’t show all of the funniest parts in the trailers. While I really enjoyed it and I’m glad I saw it, it wasn’t Stiller’s best film. The plot was really predictable. While I did say it was classic Ben Stiller that was also part of the problem which was the movie seemed a little formulaic. Stiller also didn’t seem to have the same chemistry with Akerman or Monaghan that he did with Cameron Diaz or Jennifer Aniston in his earlier hits. The humor in this movie also crosses the line into the seriously uncomfortable range in a number of places.
If like Ben Stiller or you’re looking for a good date movie this is still probably the movie for you. I wouldn’t kill yourself to see this in the theaters though. The Heartbreak Kid will make a better rental anyway.
Rating: 3/5 stars
High Point: Jerry Stiller
Low Point: The very predictable plot.

Why is Gone Baby Gone nepotism and The Heartbreak kid isn’t? Just wondering?

Different reviewers yielded that one (Walt reviewed HBK and I commented on GBG). I might not have called nepotism on this one though as Stiller #1 didn’t direct/cast Stiller #2. However I wouldn’t be surprised if the younger Stiller didn’t make that part of the deal considering how many times we’ve seen those two paired.

their case for making Stiller’s first wife into an annoying monster, etc. was totally un-convincing… it made him look all the more like a lame-o
