Audio Video: Home Theater Guide

I’ll tell you right now that there just isn’t enough time in the weekend to see all of the movies heading your way today. You’ve got pretty much something for everyone minus the romantic comedy genre. There’s a vampire flick, a crime drama, a character drama, slapstick comedy, a “war on terror” movie, and even a religious movie. If you can’t find something to watch this weekend then you’re probably in a coma. And if you’re in a coma then read some more articles here at Wild Bluff Media. It’s not like you’ve got anywhere else to be.

Here are all your movie details & trailers for this weekend, October 19 - 21, 2007.

30 Days of Night

30 Days of Night
Starring: Josh Hartnett, Melissa George, Ben Foster
Director: David Slade
Genre: Horror/Suspense, Science-Fiction/Fantasy, Thriller, Vampires
Rated: R for strong violence
Plot: Set in the isolated town of Barrow, Alaska, in the extreme northern hemisphere, where everything is plunged into complete darkness annually for an entire month. When most of the inhabitants head south for the winter, a mysterious group of strangers appear: bloodthirsty vampires, ready to take advantage of the uninterrupted darkness to feed on the town’s residents.
My Take: I like the idea they’re going with here by taking vampires heading to Alaska for the long dark. This probably won’t be the best vampire movie, but still looks like fun. I’m also anxious to see Ben Foster again in what’s been described as the highlight casting of the bunch.

Rendition

Rendition
Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Jake Gyllenhaal, Alan Arkin
Director: Gavin Hood
Genre: Drama, Thriller and Politics/Religion
Rated: R for torture/violence and language.
Duration: 2 hrs. 2 min.
Plot: A thriller that centers on Isabella El-Ibrahimi, the American wife of Egyptian-born chemical engineer Anwar El-Ibrahimi, who disappears on a flight from South Africa to Washington. Isabella desperately tries to track her husband down, while a CIA analyst at a secret detention facility outside the U.S. is forced to question his assignment as he becomes party to the man’s unorthodox interrogation.
My Take: Definitely interested in seeing this one. Gyllenhaal has done enough good in the past to warrant in an interest in this film. Tack that on to a very relevant topic and I’ll buy a ticket.

Things We Lost In the Fire

Things We Lost in the Fire
Starring: Halle Berry, Benicio Del Toro, Alison Lohman
Director: Susanne Bier
Genre: Drama
Rated: R for drug content and language.
Duration: 1 hr. 58 min.
Plot: A recent widow (Berry) invites her husband’s troubled best friend (Del Toro) to live with her and her two children. As he gradually turns his life around, he helps the family cope and confront their loss.
My Take: If you’re in the mood for a sad character movie then this should be your choice for the weekend. It’s garnering Oscar buzz already for both the leads (Berry and Del Toro).

Gone Baby Gone

Gone Baby Gone
Starring: Morgan Freeman, Ed Harris, Casey Affleck
Director: Ben Affleck
Genre: Drama, Crime/Gangster and Adaptation
Rated: R for violence, drug content and pervasive language.
Duration: 1 hr. 55 min.
Plot: Two young private detectives are hired to take a closer look at the mysterious disappearance of a little girl and soon discover that nothing is what it seems. Ultimately, they will have to risk everything — their relationship, their sanity, and even their lives — to find a little girl-lost.
My Take: Nothing like nepotism to get a movie going. Affleck directs while the junior Affleck stars. It’s getting pretty strong reviews so far, but I’m still have trouble getting past the Affleck part. How about some commas while you’re at it, Affleck?

The Comebacks

The Comebacks
Starring: David Koechner, Robert Ri’chard, DJ Qualls
Director: Tom Brady
Genre: Comedy and Sports
Rated: PG-13 for crude and sexual content throughout and some drug material.
Plot: This spoof comedy follows an out-of-luck coach, Lambeau Fields, who takes a rag-tag bunch of college misfits and drives them towards the football championships. In the process, this life-long loser discovers that he is a winner after all by redeeming himself, saving his relationship with his family and friends, and finding that there is indeed, no “I” in “team”!
My Take: I’d really like to go for this one as a good ol’ slapstick comedy is fun, but I’m not convinced this will be good. I’ll have to wait on some positive reviews and even this will have to be a rental viewing.

Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments
Starring: Ben Kingsley, Christian Slater, Elliott Gould
Director: Bill Boyce, John Stronach
Genre: Religion, Animated, Family
Rated: PG for some mild peril.
Plot: The Egyptian Prince, Moses (voiced by Christian Slater), learns of his true heritage as a Hebrew and his divine mission as the deliverer of his people.
My Take: Well this one sneaked up. Expect a follow on of 11 more movies as part of the epic Bible stories series. But Christian Slater for Moses? Really? I mean, really?
