The sequel is out there. Okay, Mulder would probably stick with the original line, “the truth is out there,” but either way I’m still thrilled to hear there is some real progress being made in X-Files land. Three months ago I told you about the rumors that an acceptable script, penned by series creator Chris Carter, was floating around and both original leads were attached to the project. TV Guide is now reporting that things are closer than ever to an official kickoff to filming:

X-2 is tentatively scheduled to shoot in December, with Carter directing from a script that he penned with X-phile Frank Spotnitz. “I want us to go out and do what the show always did best, which is really smart, scary, ultimately ambiguous stuff,” Duchovny said. “There’s been a lot of shows and movies that kind of tread the same area, or tried to, and I think we always did it best. And I hope we can go out and do it best again.”

With filming not set to start until late, late this year I wouldn’t expect to see this movie before 2009, though I guess a very late 2008 might always be possible. The TV series has been off the air for so long (series completed in 2002) that the writers could start from any point they wanted, giving them plenty of freedom for the characters. It’s hard for me to even imagine what the storyline will be though it’s safe to bet there will be alien forces and government conspiracy abounding.
