Pushing Daisies

Just when I thought my fascination with the new ABC romantic dramedy Pushing Daisies couldn’t get any bigger they went and topped themselves last night. Quoting obscure pop culture that I hold in a special place is a surefire way to gain access to said place. Pushing Daisies did just that when they quoted “Birdhouse In Your Soul” by They Might Be Giants from their 1990 album, Flood. While I immediately picked up on this inclusion I wondered how many people would miss the reference to the nearly 18 year old song. Should this song have piqued your interest I highly recommend checking out the entire Flood album from TMBG as the rest of its songs are just a quirky and entertaining.

In case you missed the episode (shame on you) the scene under discussion featured Olive leading Chuck’s aunt Vivian to get over her grief of losing her niece (Vivian doesn’t know Ned brought Chuck back to life) by making a birdhouse in her soul. I was quite tickled to see Olive and Vivian later singing these few lines as they drove through Couer d’ Couers (their colorful hometown):

I’m your only friend
I’m not your only friend
But I’m a little glowing friend
But really I’m not actually your friend
But I am

Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch
Who watches over you
Make a little birdhouse in your soul
Not to put too fine a point on it
Say I’m the only bee in your bonnet
Make a little birdhouse in your soul
