While it may not have been scientifically proven I’m pretty sure Michael Mann can walk on water. In 1995 Mann delivered what I consider to be the best cops and robbers movie ever with Heat starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, so when I heard of an upcoming reunion between Mann and De Niro I could barely contain my excitement. I’m tempted to say this could only get better with Pacino attached I think I’ll try to not get too greedy here.
Mann will direct and De Niro will Mob it up just like he said he wanted to stop doing. Wait, what? Yeah, De Niro was tired of extending that stereotype and I can totally understand. People always assume that I’m really, really smart just because I’m so good looking, but like De Niro I’ve learned to live with that burden. But enough about me, let’s focus on the second most important thing, the story:
Helmer Michael Mann has cut a deal at Paramount Pictures to develop “Frankie Machine” as a star vehicle for Robert De Niro.
De Niro and Jane Rosenthal produce through their Tribeca Films shingle. Alex Tse has just been set to do a major overhaul of the concept under Mann’s supervision.
The drama is an adaptation of Don Winslow novel “The Winter of Frankie Machine.” De Niro will play Frank Machianno, a mob hitman who has retired to run a bait shop. He agrees to help the son of a mob boss resolve a dispute with another Mafioso but is forced to turn into Frankie Machine again when he realizes he’s been set up to be killed.
So the name is kinda cheesy, “Frankie Machine”, but was probably their second choice after finding out that yes, in fact, “Tommy Gun” had been used.
In case your life is empty and hollow as a result of having never seen Heat, here is the best scene, though the 2.5+ hour movie is totally worth watching over and over and…
