My Review: Bee Movie has successfully been hyped using every outlet at ABC/Disney’s disposal. The hype has only increased as this is Jerry Seinfeld’s first major project since ending his TV show years ago. As a result we had little choice but to take the kids to go see it this weekend. The big problem with hype… it sets your expectations so high they are damn near unmeetable. You can see where this is heading. Yes I was disappointed with this movie but, not for the reasons you might expect.
Here is what I expected a fun light-hearted kids movie with lots a laughs and great animation. What I got was a fun light-hearted kids movie with lots a laughs and great animation and an awful plot. In The Bee Movie, Barry B. Benson, is a bee who is faced with the biggest decision of his life, and well, the only decision of a bees life, which honey making job does he want. Before settling down to an endless life of honey production, Barry takes a special trip outside the hive. When his life is saved by a florist name Vanessa, a scandalous mixed-species relationship blossoms. While spending time with his illicit girlfriend, he discovers humans enslave bees to make honey for them. I loved this movie right up until this point. There were some really funny scenes that had both the kids and I laughing out loud. If they had just finished the film this way with some cute little ending in which Barry gets the humans to accept bees and his hive to accept non-conformity I would have walked out of the theater fully satisfied. Instead, Barry then decides to sue the human race.
The legal proceeding which were intended to be humorous were not and really made no sense whatsoever. Without spoiling the film, I can tell you that the unexpected results of the case lead to the end of Bee civilization and threatens life on Earth. Then in what is meant to be one of these a feel good endings in which if we all work together we can save the world, the problems are instantaneously solved. I came away thinking, ‘that was stupid’. The first half of the movie was great (that’s the part the trailer below is from), the second half was awful.
Rating: 2/5 stars
High Point: The part where Barry meets humans outside the hive for the first time
Low Point: Everything after Barry decides to sue the human race
