Tonight we will find out who will be this season’s Dancing With The Stars Champions. In a two hour special we will go from three couples to one. Choosing a champion this season was made a little more difficult last night because of the quality of the performances. Tom Bergeron kept saying how harsh the judges were last night. Really, I don’t think the judges were that harsh. I think they were dead on target. These were not the best performances we have seen from these couples this season. Seriously, the bar was set so high so early in the season, we have come to expect high quality performances every week from all the couples. Last night I was frankly disappointed with all of the couples. This is like when all of the best games occur during the playoffs and the Superbowl is one of those boring games everyone turns off at halftime. There wasn’t a single perfect score last night! Not one. For weeks we have been seeing 30 after 30. Last night, not one. Although kudos to Helio & Julianne with their 29 in the freestyle which came the closest to perfection. Here is how the couples ended up based on the judges scores:
Overall Judge’s Leader Board
Mel & Maksim: 55
Helio & Julianne: 54
Marie & Jonathon: 46
If you ever watched Sesame Street as a kid you will remember that game One of These Things is Not Like the Others. Lets take a look at those scores and see if we can figure out which couple doesn’t belong. If you guessed Marie & Jonathon, you’d be right. It is questionable if Marie & Jonathon even belong in the finals. I really didn’t think they should have been, and I’m not the only one. In an interview with Extra, Maks agreed, stating, “I think Jennie was better than Marie. Frankly, I think there are a lot of other people better than Marie.” The fact that Marie & Jonathon didn’t even break 50 last night lends a lot of credence to that opinion. So in the hope that the audience did the right thing I’m going to count Marie & Jonathon out of the running.
That leaves us with Mel & Maks and Helio & Julianne. This is a tough call. Both of these couples have put in so many great performances this season. Mel & Maks have consistently wowed us but, Helio & Julianne have improved so much and come on so strong in the past few weeks its hard not to root for them. I’d be happy if either of the couples won. If I had to pick one though, it would be Helio & Julianne. In a night of sub-par performances they had the best routine of the evening. It really could go either way with their scores being so close though. Only one way to find out, I’ll be tuning in to the 2-hour finale tonight at 8/7c.
