Marie Osmond has made it quite a season of surprise survivals week after week. While her status as an Osmond has earned her a legion of fans some are arguing that its this same fan base keeping her around each week rather her dancing abilities. We’ve seen a lot of back and forth between those arguing on both sides of that fence, but I was most surprised to hear someone speak up much closer to the source. Maksim Chmerkovskiy, the dancing partner of the leading competitor Mel B., spoke out against Marie in an interview with Extra:
“Frankly, I think there were a lot of other people better than Marie,” Chmerkovskiy tells Extra, suggesting that the 48-year-old singer was carried into the finale due to public sympathy over the loss of her father and her 16-year-old son’s recent entry into rehab.
“I know firsthand there are a lot of celebrities on the show that went through similar situations [family issues] this season and decided not to make it public,” Chmerkovskiy said.
Well if we’re going to be talking ‘frankly’ here then I’ve gotta say that Maksim always came off way too cocky for me. So while I think he might be right that there were several dancers who were doing better than Marie I don’t agree that it was her family issues that kept her around. I already said I think that it’s her longstanding fan base, not sympathy votes. It’s certainly a polarizing topic, so feel free to tell me I’m right or wrong below in the Comments section.

Dancing With The Stars Season 6 Begins Tonight | Wild Bluff Media : Entertainment Examined
March 17th, 2008 at 11:12 am[...] great leg up on her competitors. I think she’ll be the one to watch this season and will make Maksim wish he hadn’t bailed [...]

Did I miss something? Did Marie plot to have her father die at some strategic point in the competition to give her an edge? Was fainting her calculated strategy? And didn’t I read that Larry King blindsided Marie with the whole “son in rehab” thing? Sounds like someone [Maks] is jealous of Marie’s fan base and his “green” is showing. She can’t help it if she has a whole lifetime of talent and thousands of devoted fans, and poor cocky little arrogant Maks can’t compete with that. Dancing with the Stars is as much about entertainment as it is about dancing. If it was just about who was the best dancer, there wouldn’t be an audience vote, and there would be a more level playing field (same age range and background… not a racecar driver competing with someone who basically does correography every day of her working life). Mel may be a better dancer… but whether or not she’s more entertaining is a determination that’s really up to those being entertained! Personally, I’m more entertained by Marie!

… and I am WAY more entertained by Jonathan than by “I’m-so-great-look-at-me” Maks.

Marie Osmond is a fantastic mother, sister, daughter and foremost entertainer. I would rather watch and hear from her than Makim (who?) jealous slob.

People need to grow up - quit your whining! If it were a true dance competition - and only dance was being judged - then the celebrities would not be there. The dancers would all be professional. Because they have America helping to decide who should win, and in order to keep America watching, they have celebrities competing. People keep forgetting that they are not pro, have not done the dancing all their lives, and have different levels of abilities. Any by now people who watch this show should know it is more a popularity contest and not a true dance competition.
Marie may not be a professional dancer, and she has made a lot of mistakes. But people like her…people know her name. She should not win if this were just a dance competition. The pro dancer need to keep their mouths shut - they are not the competitors here - they are the teachers and accessory on the arms of the celebrity dancers.

one more thing - she did not plan and strategize to have her father die and her son enter rehab so she could get sympathy votes. Kim - those are such rude, inconsiderate, stupid, gross, and other choice words comments to make. How could you even think that? How would you feel if you manipulated your parents lives so that you could benefit from their deaths or worse, just to make yourself feel better? Come on…grow up!

ALL RIGHT KIM AND GERTIE ‘I SECOND THAT EMOTION’ COULDN’T HAVE SAID IT BETTER. PROS ARE ACTING WORSE THAN THE CELEBS….THEY WOULD NOT HAVE A JOB RIGHT NOW IF IT WASN’T FOR THE CELEBS. AND MAKS HAS SAID NEGATIVE STATEMENTS ABOUT HIS PARTNER TOO…COME ON jULIANNE OR MARIE SHOCK THE HECK OUT OF THE PROS! SO THAT THEY CAN COME BACK “DOWN” TO EARTH

Kids having chicken pox hardly compares with the death of your father. I have seen lots of kids with chikenpox and its a hassle but hardly a tragedy. I think Mel has been carrying Max, that last routine, the freestyle, was sooooo badly choriographed. MAX is eye candy….he ruins the whole thing when he opens his mouth.

I love Marie but would never vote for her in a dance competition. It is about who is the best dancer and I am sorry Marie, you are not. Max is a pain and should keep his mouth shut.

First of all Ture Max should not be saying anything, but he is only saying what everyone else on that show was thinking. He is not stating the obvious that her dad passed and she was using that, she could not have planned that. but what he is saying is that she was kept around becasue of the fan base that she has had over the years. Now i am sorry, this contest is based on dance 1st then entertainment level, and i still feel that she did not bring any more to the table then some of the stars that were voted off before her. (i.e, Sabrina, Cameron, Jeannie…) And how I got so sick of her stating “Well I’m almost 50″… Jane Seymour is way older than her and you never once heard her go there!!! I am the same age as marie and I do not go there either and I am a workout Queen. But i think that she did use a lot of sympathy tactics to contnue to get the votes. And unfortunatley it’s those people that are messing the entire show up by keeping a Marie versus Sabrina. Case being Marie should not have gotten 3rd place she should’ve been voted off at least by week 3. If she had won the whole thing or even had come in 2nd place last night, that would’ve been the last time i watched DWTS. For all those marie Osmond voters, next time do us all a favor DON’T vote as a matter of fact don’t even watch the show instead tune into the Biggest Loser because there you have no say in who stays or goes home!!!!
