Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader

A while back as I was doing some research for my post on American Idol contestant Kellie Pickler’s appearance on FOX’s game show Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader I came across the Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader book by Michael Benson. Since my family and I are such big fans of the show, I decided to check it out. To be honest I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. The cover says ‘The Play-At-Home-Companion Book to the Hit TV Show’ so I thought maybe it would include sections on different subjects explaining the answers on the show. It turns out that the book is actually a version of the show itself.

The book includes 75 quizzes each of which has the same set of questions a contestant might encounter on the show. If you have never seen the show there are two questions from each grade level 1 - 5 in different subjects and then the $1,000,000 question which is another fifth grade question. For example: 1st Grade Geography, Florida borders Georgia and what other U.S. State? Answer: Alabama. or Fifth Grade History: Which of these was invented first A. TV, B. Frozen Food, C. Lie Detector, or D. Pop-Up Toaster Answer: D. The Pop-Up Toaster was invented first in 1919. The lie detector was invented in 1921, frozen food and the TV in 1923. It has been a long time since fifth grade hasn’t it?

My children, who are both in elementary school, love to watch the show with us. We had lots of fun asking them questions from the book and they had lots of fun watching my wife and I get them wrong! If you have kids, this would be a great book to bring with you on a long car ride over the holidays. You can easily kill an hour playing the game with everyone. Over Thanksgiving with my family the adults also had a great time with this book. It was fun to watch someone groan as they struggled to answer a third grade arithmetic question.

Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader also includes an introduction by comedian Jeff Foxworthy, host of the TV Show. If you pick up the book it’s worth reading even if you’re not a Foxworthy fan. It’s quite amusing and gives a little background on how he got involved with the show.

I have to admit we’ve had a lot of fun with this book. I highly recommend it.
