It seems Laila Ali is the latest celebrity to segue her Dancing With The Stars fame into something more. NBC has decided to bring back American Gladiators with Ali as one of the hosts. You probably need to be at least 30 to have any real recollection of this show. NBC produced it in the 80’s. Imagine a everyday people battling a team of body builders in some training competitions and you have the show. People mostly watched it to see the contestants get pummeled. Even in the 80’s its fame was short lived while it was in prime time. Mostly it had a cult following of folks watching it super late on Saturday nights. t is the game show equivalent to professional wrestling. Speaking of Professional wrestling, the other host of the show is another 80’s left over, professional wrestling legend Hulk Hogan.
While I’m very happy for Laila Ali because she is gaining a little more lime light. I’m really not sure that this is the best venue for her. Put aside the fact that this show will probably not be on the air long again and that it is probably only on because of the writers strike you still have to deal with the fact that American Gladiators is one of the cheesiest shows ever produced. It was in the 80’s and they haven’t changed a thing since then, not the events, hell, even the costumes look the same. Bottom line, good for Laila, bad for television audiences. (Oh and I should add that, yeh, I’ll probably watch it.)
