After watching part 2 of the premiere last night, I now feel prepared to pass judgment on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Like everyone else in the world I loved the terminator movies. Who didn’t right? So I thought it was cool that they were going to try to bring it to television. Obviously you always run a risk when you do that because there is never the same production budget and you can’t do all the same things on television that you can in the theater (except maybe on HBO).
I liked the way they connected the storyline between where the movies left off and the show picks up. If you didn’t see it the show begins in 1999 two years after the end of the last film. After a new terminator attack The characters jump ahead into the future (well, modern day for us, 2007) to shake off the pursuit of the robots and the authorities. Now in the present day John Connor can get on with his life and Sarah can continue to prepare him for the future. So far the story has been great and the action is awesome.
Lena Headey plays Sarah Connor. I have been a huge fan of hers ever since I saw her in 300. I loved her in that so I was very excited to to see her in this. I know Sarah Connor is supposed to be very rough and tumble but, Lena is very attractive and I wish they would show that off a little better. I think she did a very creditable job as Sarah Connor though. She is definitely tough enough to be Sarah Connor. I also recommend that they not cover up her tattoos with makeup on the show to give her even more of that look.
I guess the one thing that bothered me a little about the show is its a little too much the terminator meets the OC (i.e., its seems to be more like Smallville than BattleStar Galactica). The real main character of the show is the teen-aged John Connor played by Thomas Dekker. He is struggling to balance his role as future savior of mankind with the normal day to day life as your average high schooler. He is assisted by an attractive teen-aged terminator, Cameron Phillips, sent from the future to protect him. This teen-aged terminator is played by Summer Glau. She is no stranger to adventure and Sci Fi television shows, having had recurring roles on Firefly, the 4400, and the Unit. Her character is a little Data like in that she is trying to figure out how to be more human. In future episodes my guess is that she will end up as John’s love interest. I understand that they are trying to appeal to a younger audience and I hope it works out for them. If you are a hard core fan of the terminator movies though it is obviously a bit watered down.
Bottom line is a I like this show. It isn’t as intense as some of the other great Sci Fi shows on TV today like Heroes or BattleStar Galactica but it certainly has the potential to reach Stargate or Buffy quality levels. They did take a page out of BattleStar’s by giving the main character the possibility of having cancer. It looks like they have a full season ready to run so the writer’s strike should not affect the airing of this show. his is a show that I will be making time to watch every week. I think The Sarah Connor Chronicles has a lot of potential and I look forward to seeing where they take the story the rest of this season.
