Tonight the American Idol auditions head across the country for a little southern hospitality. Simon, Paula, and Randy are in Charleston, South Carolina to see what the south has to offer. Of course if you had to judge based solely on the auditions they showed on the air it wouldn’t seem like the south had much but it seems that this year in particular they are really focusing on the awful auditions. Each night I think we’ve gotten to see maybe 20% of the people headed to Hollywood. I will say that while Charleston had its fair share of awful singers I tended to find them less irritating than the wackos we’ve seen in the other cities.
The couple who met on the American Idol message boards were cute. They obviously were allowed to sing in front of Randy, Paula, and Simon because they had such a cute American Idol related story. It certainly wasn’t because they could sing. Jeffery and Michelle Lambkin, were a surprise. When were interviewed, I figured this audition was going to be joke. It turns out they can really sing. I was shocked. They were amazing. I was really glad that the judges sent them to Hollywood and most shocking of all it was Simon who sent them and sent them together. Maybe he has a heart after all.
The Catholic school girl, Amy Catherine Flynn (a.k.a., Mary Catherine Gallagher) who likes to preach on the virtues of sexual abstinence was interesting. Simon said she said she sounded like annoying school girl singing in the bedroom. He also thought that a lot of people are going to think she is highly annoying. Paula thought she was adorable. I definitely agreed with one of them, guess which? In the end they (including Simon) sent her to Hollywood. I think Simon just did it because he thought 1 week in LA would cure her of her moral inhibitions.
After having to leave the auditions on day to take his preganant wife to the hospital. Oliver Highman had a chance on day 2 to audition for the judges. I couldn’t believe that he brought his wife and new born baby who is less than 24 hours old back down to the auditions. He didn’t make it to Hollywood. He wouldn’t even have made it on TV if his wife hadn’t gone into labor while he was waiting on line to audition.
Not bad South Carolina. 23 contestants were sent to Hollywood. It wasn’t as strong as I’d hoped from the south but not bad. Next week the American Idol auditions are off to Omaha Nebraska. May be they can find a few country boys (or girls) to send to Hollywood.
