American Idol Stage

Tonight the American Idol auditions were from Omaha, Nebraska. After some of the craziness we had seen on the west coast and down South, I had hoped that we might get some more level headed contestants from the Midwest. Yeh, well… so much for that idea. The craziness actually started with the judges. Paula’s plan was late so Randy and Simon had to get started without her. The first kid in the room, Chris Bernheisel, was in tears before he even started singing because he was so grateful that the Idol auditions came to Nebraska. After showing Randy and Simon his pictures of he and Kelly Clarkson, he proceeded to butcher one of her songs. Randy and Simon did decide to let him help host the red carpet at the finals show. Hopefully he gets a little Ritalin before then.

Omaha actually brought some talent. Jason Rich a part time farmhand from Iowa was so nervous he forgot the words. Simon was actually coaching him with the lyrics. Simon and Randy must have been in a great mood because they still sent him through to Hollywood. That was shocking. He had a great voice but I still can’t believe that Simon let him slide. Maybe Paula should be late more often. Rachel Wicker the arm wrestling champion sounded awesome and she looked pretty good too. Simon didn’t like her performance but fortunately for her Paula was back so she and Randy were able to send Rachel to Hollywood.

Sarah Whiticker (a.k.a., ex-professional wrestler Lady Morgue) was just weird and not in a good funny way. What was funny was when Ryan and Paula switched jobs. Samantha Sidley had the opportunity to be judged by Ryan. I felt bad for her because she was awesome and she had to listen to the judges bicker about her. I liked her a lot. So did the judges. In the end she got four yeses. Angelica Puente, the Celine Dion sound-alike was the next powerhouse to make it to Hollywood. I thought they made her back story a little over dramatic, but I wont hold that against her, she can sing. David Cook, the Daughtry-inspired rocker, also made it to Hollywood.

Johnny Escamilla was… I’ll be nice and call him unique. Johnny, different isn’t always a good thing. I’m glad you’re a student because frankly you’re going to need a day job. Leo Marlowe closed out the show with another strong performance. the Midwest definitely came out strong. Tonight’s auditions had a much higher proportion of quality to craziness which surprised me because there were only 19 contestants sent on to Hollywood from Omaha. That’s ‘less than the other cities’. Tomorrow night the American Idol auditions are back in Miami FLA.
