Tonight was the South’s second chance to show what its made of. Charleston, South Carolina, did the South Proud, now it is Georgia’s turn. The American Idol auditions were down in Atlanta, GA.
Tonight was definitely a story of the good, the bad, and the ugly. The first three contestants were the perfect example: one who was going to Hollywood and shouldn’t have been, one who shouldn’t ever be allowed to sing again, and one who was absolutely brilliant. Joshua Jones, the demonic-eyed, glass cutter, was the first to get a golden ticket. I really didn’t like him. His eyes bugged out whenever he sings to the point where the judges made him sing with his back to them. My big problem with him though was his voice. He was a little too breathy and it almost seemed like his voice was about to crack. JP the next contestant had auditioned in Season 4 and sat just two seats away from Carrie Underwood. He didn’t make it in Season 4 and he didn’t make it in Season 7. He was a little too goofy and not a good singer. The surprising part was that he is a music major focusing on voice. He is obviously in denial. Asia’H Epperson was AWESOME! She sang LeAnn Rimes’ How do I Live Without You for her dad who passed away in a car accident just a few days before the audition. Wow, she had some pipes. I’m looking forward to seeing her in Hollywood. I really hope she makes to the finals. She might have been my favorite audition so far this season.
Miss South Florida Fair, Brooke Helvie was very cute, very blonde, and not the sharpest marble in the bag. For Brooke, there is nothing more important than American Idol except for God and her parents. She was determined to prove Simon wrong about whether pageant girls can sing. She did it and got the pass to Hollywood. Good thing she didn’t have to answer any questions though. Simon called her ‘possibly the most annoying person I have ever met.’ Apparently he didn’t remember Julie Dubela from Miami.
Eva Miller definitely fell into the bad category. She couldn’t sing and she couldn’t dance but she did have a crush on Simon. She wiped out while performing and then broke down into tears when Simon thought her audition was just an act. Simon gave her a hug to make her fell better before sending her on her way. Sixteen year old, Alexandra Lushington brought her 93 year old great grandma and sang an inspiring version of My Funny Valentine to get her golden ticket. Nathan Hite, the 16 year old emo kid with an attitude was next. He sang Finger 11’s Paralyzer. He didn’t sound bad. He could be the lead singer of his high school garage band. Simon called it a bedroom audition. Nathan tried to give Simon a hard time but it didn’t really work. Amanda was the rock and roll nurse had a really cool voice. She had the right kind of attitude. I liked her a lot. Nathan wishes he was half as bad ass as Amanda. The judges loved her sound. Paula called Amanda the female Chris Daughtry. She got three yeses.
The final audition of the night was Josiah Leming, the kid who was living in his car. He tried singing one of his own songs. It was a little weird because he had an English accent when he sang and he warbled too much. Paula loved this kid. Randy sent him through just because he thought he was interesting. I was surprised that Simon said yes too. I disagreed with the judges. I didn’t like it at all. Hopefully he can get it under control before Hollywood.
Tomorrow night is the last night of auditions. Yeh! These will be all the worst auditions this season. I can’t wait to move on to Hollywood next week.

To use one of Simon’s expressions, these auditions have been “simply dreadful.”
How many overwrought, on-the-verge-of-tears backstories and clown acts do we have to suffer through to find contestants? Guaranteed that they’re turning away many good singers because they just aren’t “interesting” enough for the masses. Blech!!!!

I totally agree that it feels like they’re turning away singers with potential for singers with drama. Let’s just hope the top 24 have some real talent.
