Tonight was the final night of auditions. This was a combination of the best and worst auditions from across the country. Now being a pessimist, I expected there to be far more in the worst category than the best. It turned out there was a nice mix a both. So here’s what we saw:
Best: Amy Davis from Indiana sang Blue Bayou. She had a pretty face as well as a pretty voice and is going to Hollywood.
Worst: Tiffany McCampbell said her voice was a gift from God. She sang a gospel song called Hallelujah. The best thing I can say was it was loud. I’m surprised Simon’s ears didn’t start bleeding. I hope she got a gift receipt.
Worst: The twins from North Carolina who shared a girlfriend were a little weird. The dual audition where the one beatboxed while the other forgot the lyrics to their rap song was pretty lame. Their girlfriend Ashley, tried to bribe Simon by giving him her dog Panda. Simon loved the dog but hated the singing. Outside of her ear shot even the twins were willing to admit that she couldn’t sing.
Best: Cardin Lee McKinley, the Ponderosa waitress, had a great voice, but Simon questioned whether she could be a modern pop singer. Paula and Randy sent her through.
Best: JoAnne Borgella, the plus-sized model from Hoboken NJ, did a nice job with her version of Celine Dion. Once again it was thanks to Paula and Randy that she got her golden ticket.
Worst: Also attempting to sing Celine Dion was Alesha Stezel from California. Alesha failed. She failed miserably. Simon called it dreadful. Randy and Paula thought she had a nice tone and sounded like Dolly Parton. The judges sent her out to learn a Dolly Parton song. After learning Islands in the Stream, Alesha headed back in for round 2. Paula was grinning ridiculously during her audition. Paula and Randy loved it. Simon didn’t vote yes or no, although later he admitted that she did sound like Dolly. Paula and Randy sent her through. I really didn’t think it was much better. She may have gotten through but it was still not good. She has no chance to make the final 24.
Worst, Worst, Worst: Brandie Gregory, Randy Charles Lindner, and Jay Smoov. Jay Smoov sang an original song (always a bad choice, especially while sprinkling fairy dust).
Best: Chikezie Eze auditioned last year. Mr. Eze improved dramatically and earned himself a trip to Hollywood, California.
Chikezie wasn’t the only second timer tonight. Danny Noriega, was cut in Hollywood last year after nerves and a bad song choice sank his chances. This year he was back with more confidence and an awesome rendition of Proud Mary. He sounded great when he was singing. When he wasn’t singing he sounded a little feminine. Am Idol’s about the singing, so welcome to Hollywood Danny!
I think the most shocking thing I learned this evening was that Randy Jackson has type 2 diabetes. One of the commercials featured Randy talking about his diabetes and encouraging people to learn more. I had no idea.
That’s it. The auditions are over for Season 7. Next week we are off to Ha-Lee-Wood!
For next year, if your thinking about auditioning remember what Ryan said at the beginning of the show, ‘Different isn’t always better.’
