After my initial hesitations on the “soulmates” twist for Big Brother 9 CBS has provided more information which makes this sound a bit more interesting. Apparently none of these soulmated houseguests (check them all out here) have ever met. Instead they were matched based on an e-Harmony style profiling (no idea what system they really used and I’m sure it wasn’t e-Harmony, that’s just an example). They won’t know who their match is until they’ve entered the house. At that point they’ll be locked at the hip, not literally of course. They’ll have to sleep together, literally this time, share power together, get nominated together, and even face eviction together. Yikes.
Okay, so that makes some serious implications for the timeline of the game. If we have 16 couples that operate in pairs we’ll only have 7 evictions and apparently 2 winners for Big Brother 9. It’s probably safe to bet that the winners will have to split the $500,000 rather than each getting a half million. So if there are only 7 evictions that means we’re looking at a shortened season. GRRRR! Do not want. I want a full blown season, especially after I argued against those abbreviated season rumors. That’s still speculation on my part, but seems obvious. I’ll keep investigating that and let you know.
Another interesting tidbit here is the rumor that Big Brother 9 houseguests Jen and Ryan are/were dating. I’m also willing to guess that they won’t get paired up as a match as CBS has indicated all the soulmate pairs will be strangers. Now that’s crazy as it should make for some very interesting situations. Would you really be able to compete fully against your girlfriend/boyfriend if he/she were on the other team? The fact that she’ll have to sleep in another guy’s bed should also provide for plenty of friction. Um, that was a totally unintentional pun, I swear. Of course if there were any of those “friction” situations CBS won’t show it on-air, so you’ll have to watch the uncensored, live feeds online for that. Considering the bedrooms have dividers in them I’d think CBS is banking on some of that happening this season.
Watch the video from this morning’s The Early Show for Julie Chen previewing the Big Brother 9 houseguests with Exec Producer Grodner:

Here’s the official PR blurb from CBS with the details I just mentioned:
This season marks other BIG BROTHER firsts, including the first-ever all-single cast and the most Houseguests in BIG BROTHER history.
When this group of 16 singles enters the house, they will be told they are being matched up with their “soul mate,” a stranger who may prove to be their true love or their worst nightmare. Whether there is a love connection or not, once paired up, the Houseguests’ life in the game depends on their partner. They must strategize, plot and scheme together as a couple for a chance at the prize. These “lovebirds” will live together as a couple meaning they will sleep in the same bed, hold Head of Household as a couple, be nominated for eviction as a pair, and if the time comes, say their goodbyes together upon eviction.
