Roy Scheider, the two-time Academy Award nominee, died yesterday in Little Rock, Arkansas. According to his wife, Brenda Seimerbest, Scheider had been suffering for years from multiple myeloma. Scheider will always be remembered for his role as shark-fearing, police chief Brody in Jaws (”We’re gonna need a bigger boat!”). Although his role as the mission commander in Arthur C. Clarke’s 2010 was probably my other favorite role of his. He was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor in 1971 for his role as police detective Buddy Russo in The French Connection. His second nomination came in 1979 for Best Actor when he played choreographer Joe Gideon in Bob Fosse’s autobiographical musical, All That Jazz.
