Power of Veto episodes tend to offer the least excitement and are often just a speed bump between the energy of the nomination and eviction episodes. Well hold on because Big Brother 9 wants to end that streak. You know it’s going to be a good episode when CBS has put together a very special commercial just for this one occasion. Tonight’s big drama is all about the accidents from last weekend that sent two houseguests to the hospital (I’ll save you the drama right now and promise you they are both okay). Let’s get on with it.
Things pick up where they left off last episode, post-nominations. Alex is pissed off because he blames Amanda for his nomination. Matt is pissed off because James swore M&N were safe this week. Natalie is pissed off because it’s been five minutes since she last got to take her top off. Life in the Big Brother house is hard. While everyone is fuming over their nominations Sheila is off in a corner fuming that her friendship with Allison seems lost and forgotten. Don’t worry, Sheila’s neurotic episode will explode later on tonight.
Wasting no time tonight Big Brother 9 jumps right into the Power of Veto competition. It’s a crossover event as CBS is feeding us a competition all about another CBS show, Jericho. I’ve never watched Jericho although I do salute its fans for getting the show back on the air. Just the same, I don’t think either of these will entice me to watch the show. Anyways, the HGs head out back and are confronted with a series of short telephone poles and sets of cabling. Matt is quick to identify that he’ll have to use his hands in this competition, giving him an advantage. Aww, isn’t Matt cute when he tries to make a thought? Not to be outdone, Alex comments that this PoV challenge is “kinda like a puzzle.” Somebody get these guys a cookie and a strait jacket. They’ve earned it!
The competitors have to run up and down their row and connect various lengths of cables to fit just right onto the telephone poles. The first team to get all their cables correctly connected will be able to “reconnect the power” and win the Power of Veto. It’s hard to really see who is leading as the space is tight but before too long we see Joshuah and Sharon scramble to find the last missing cable and rush to hit the power button. Sure enough, the one couple that needed this PoV the least is the couple that wins it. Go figure.
As a reward, on top of the PoV, everyone in the house gets to watch a couple of messages of news from the outside world. The first news is that John McCain is leading for the Republican nomination. Amanda squeals with delight. The second news is that Obama is leading for the Democrats. Again, Amanda jumps and cheers with joy. Does Amanda know she only gets to vote once? The last tidbit is that the Hudson River Virus is spreading. Everyone gets nervous because they don’t know if they should be scared or not. Oh wait, you know why you’ve never heard of the Hudson River Virus? Why that’s because you don’t watch Jericho and don’t know that this is fake news from CBS trying to pretend like it’s a real, serious issue. Nice going CBS. But before the moment is over James lets us know that he thinks he has figured that out and that it has to do with the four colored outfits the HG competitors are wearing and the four colored hamster toy. Do we have a third strait jacket available?
Before long Sheila gets back on her “Allison has betrayed me” horse and is riding it all over the house. Finally Sharon tells Allison what Sheila is saying and Allison goes to confront her in a back bedroom. Everyone gathers close by the door to listen in. The talk quickly turns to shouting between Sheila and Allison as Sheila goes on and on about Allison having a college education and she doesn’t. Ryan comes in and starts yelling at Sheila asking her to explain what she thinks his partner did to offend her. I just knew Ryan would get better once Jen was gone! This situation doesn’t get resolved well and Allison goes outside for a run.
Now here is where the big drama enters for the night. While out running Allison starts to feel a little off and rushes inside. She starts to feel much worse very quickly and asks for an epi-pen. We can overhear a nurse come in and talk with Allison and administer the shot. Just about the same time Amanda collapses next to Natalie and when the nurse comes out to help her Amanda goes into seizures. It’s a pretty bad scene. The EMTs arrive and cart both ladies off. A few hours later both of them return and everyone is happy to see them. It turns into a regular ol’ love fest as they promise to start treating each other like real people. Sheila and Allison make up and are friends again.
To cap the night off we get the Power of Veto ceremony. Just like last week the PoV holders listen intently to the nominees and then without a chance to discuss what they’ve heard or if they’ve changed their minds they are forced to make a decision. Both nominated couples give polite and brief comments that they want to stay in the house. Joshuah & Sharon reply with their decision to leave the nominations alone. That means tomorrow night we’ll have a live eviction where either Matt & Natalie or Alex & Amanda will be heading home. Which will it be? Who do you want to see go?
